What makes it Faux IRC? What protocol does it use?
-
Oh, it is using Skype to act like IRC?

Exactly. Using a Skype group chat in place of an IRC.
-
OK I'm guessing that IRC was first and all - but aren't they all pretty much the same if you're only 'text chatting' these days? If so, is it correct to say Faux IRC?

It's not IRC, but it's being used in the same way as IRC is, thus the faux.
-
So every other text chat client would be a faux IRC as well? uh ok.

No, it's not that it's a text client. It's that it's being used a group chat for real-time consolidation. Me messaging someone or a couple other people doesn't mean it's IRC-esque. However, this is 12-15 people with an always on group. That's what makes it IRC.
-
I guess the nuance is lost on me as I've only rarely used IRC.

IRC is a chat room protocol.
XMPP is an instant messaging protocol.
Similar but different.

As a rule, you use XMPP for one or two people and it's start and end a chat. IRC is basically always up and you just sign on and join it. Similar styles but still different.
