Building a server with the Socket R 2011 systems for fun

Re: Newegg just added all these super expensive socket 2011 cpus...
So I'm BaF right now, and really don't have much going on. So lets build this unit out. See if we can make @scottalanmiller and @Minion-Queen jealous of our fictitious lab.
-
To start we'll need to settle on a CPU type, lets use this one.
Intel
Xeon
Processor E7-8890 v4 (24 cores per)
-
We'll need a motherboard to support 4 CPU's... and this one seems to fit the bill. SuperMicro 7088B-TR4FT (With chassis)
-
I'd be afraid of using anything from Lenovo. Who knows what kind of strange microcode updates they did to it.
-
@dafyre I agree, but I'm particularly lazy to try and find it on Intels website....
Here's the only memory I could find reasonably quickly.. We'll need 8 sets of this.
Edit: found a higher core count unit on Intel's website, I'm sure the price per core is something stupid, but what the hell.
-
What's our allowable budget for sheet metal, plywood, duct tape, and epoxy? We need a case, ya know....
-
The above CPU has 24 core and 48 Threads per.
That's 192 threads in a single server.

A case is already included with the only motherboard I could find for this CPU family.

Ok... we will still need a dozen or so of these for cooling:
The snowflakes make it cool more efficiently.

I dont think we'll have the budget for cooling..... this thing will have to be in space to stay cool..

Now to build the array..... paging @scottalanmiller do you have any input on a raid controller?

Even fictitious you'll struggle to compete with the NTG Lab

High end LSI with 2GB Cache.

HPE Integrity will double even that, eight sockets.

@scottalanmiller is a killjoy. . .

That's nothing, you do realize that Sparc is 128 threads PER PROCESSOR
And it goes way bigger than eight sockets.
-
You can just order an Oracle M6-32 with 384 cores right out of the catalogue.
Let that sink in... 384 CORES. Real cores.
8 Hyperthreads per core....
That's 3072 threads per server... for a mid range server.
-
I'm gonna need this catalog....

Vacuum is terrible for thermal transference, should really just dunk it in a big vat of mineral oil.

Good point. You want high density fluids, not low density.
