InfoWorld reports on Microsoft adding user data collection, previously exclusively in Windows 10, to all of the recent Windows desktop family members including Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.

I personally believe this being blown out of proportion

@Dashrender Quite probably... All the major companies probably already know everything about us anyway, lol.

It was also recently reported that MACs do the same thing.

Granted most of these are suppose to be opt in, but I think Windows 10 turned this on it's ear and more so make it opt out.

Though Scott's normally the one to defend these types of companies doing things like this. I recall a previous discussion about Amazon and Apple, and how in his opinion it's in their best interest to keep your information private.

I think this is nothing different. MS is using most if not all of this data to make a better product. Not sell you ads, nor do I believe that MS is selling your information to ad services and to prove that point MS sold most if not all of their ads services off to AOL a month or ago.

Are mistakes made? Sure, will they fix them? I hope so. Does MS suck at communicating - YEP! Do I think they spying on you for some evil purpose? Nope.

Yes, in general, as long as these things are announced, open and clear I think that they are fine. It is very important that people know that they exist and what is collected. But there is so much data out there about us and these companies are, IMHO, the last ones to actually have to worry about having it.

I suppose we need to talk about these things - but really we need to make sure we are setting a responsible tone on them.

Yes, the discussion is important. We need to understand where and when it is happening and why it potentially makes sense and if and where potential concerns exist. But that data is being collected itself is not a major concern.

Agreed. I want a list of what they collect & why & how it's used & who can use it. Then I'll quit sharpening my pitchfork and disperse the mob.

Edit: I may settle for less explanation if they get super specific about what they collect.
