Easily Remove Password Protection from PDF Files
-
People often feel that PDF password security is going to protect their documents, it is not. Supposedly built for you to access your own files to which you have lost access, this process makes it trivially easy to unlock any PDF file. This highlights not only the lack of security in PDF documents but moreoverly shows us that when you have physical access to a file, cracking the password is likely trivially easy.

Does it? Or just it just show that the encryption PDFs use is crap? How easy is it to crack a password protected Office document, for example? It used to be trivial, but I thought it was pretty tight these days? Certainly, when I needed to crack one recently I couldn't find out how to do it.
How easy is it to crack an AES encrypted 7Zip file?

Only one way to find out
Gimme an encrypted zip with a document, I'll post the contents of the document for you if I can get into it.
-
Tell me the contents of secretdoc.txt
-
-
Will do it once I'm at my main rig at home
-
still waiting.......
-
@Breffni-Potter did you get a chance to download the cracking tool and fire it up?
-
If it helps, I can tell you that the password isn't "password123" or any derivative thereof.

Sorry guys.
Was away for a few days
Will do so shortly.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are the greatest football team the world has ever known.
Is a lie.
Also could you set a password next time

How long did it take to crack once you started the program? I was going to try it but the common software for breaking into 7zip is Windows only.

You should post a new thread talking about how easily 7zip security is to break too.
I wonder how hard the new Microsoft WiFi password sharing is going to be to break given that it is a similar mechanism.

0 Seconds.
I never actually tried opening it normally. The OP never set a password
-
Sat down at my work-station, down-loaded the file again.
Double clicked...It opened.
Opened the file inside.
Copy pasted the text.
Instant success, zero effort.
Should have done that straight away, would have looked like a pro :bowtie:

Oh, that's funny.
-
I'm clearly a typical user! I'll try again in a bit.
-
My second go. I've probably screwed this up as well!
Proof, if any is needed, that the biggest threat to security is basic human error. All the software encryption in the world won't help if you're simply an idiot.

You gonna be able to have another go @Breffni-Potter or is my humiliation complete already?
