Popular hotel Internet gateway devices vulnerable to hacking

Generally things like "popular" and "hotel" are going to be vulnerable to hacking just normally.

Defcon does a lot of stuff on hotel equipment. The TVs. Phone systems etc. Are all very vulnerable.

Regardless of it being a Hotel, Motel, fast food chain, hospital or even AT&T store Wi-Fi, I am cautious of using their networks.
While I am not a hacker, don't (think) I do anything nefarious, I do what I can to protect my device from networks I don't control.
That being said,.. I know my own home network could be compromised and I not be aware of it.

Not surprised. The sad thing is those systems probably aren't being maintained either. So short of being called out, they probably won't update the firmware to protect their customers.
Additionally, why aren't these places using a WiFi password in most cases, while not 100% it does offer a pretty good amount of protection against the guy sitting next to you using that same wifi service. They just need to put the password out there for anyone to see and know. It doesn't need to be a secret password to give people the security that comes along with WPA/WPA2

Heck they generally aren't paying someone to monitor it. Its a one time install and left alone. Monitoring us the best defense against hacking after taking basic security measures.
