Does anyone create their own ring tones? Since I wiped my phone the other day, I've considered creating a new batch of ringtones.

Nope, have never done that. But then again, my phone is only ever on silent.

I did create one ringtone for my phone years ago and I have migrated it around with me. I generally have my phone on silent anyway.

Ditto Zedge. It has pretty much everything.

Back in the users of Midi I've made some from scratch, heck even some of the old nokia's could make them using music notes from the device it self..

Now if you are referring to smartphone ringtones which are just mp3's cut to a limited time, no. I haven't. I've used online sites back when I did that but, most of the time if I use one it's just the built-in ringtones. Vibrate is my main mode as well though.

I do this. Also for custom alarms, as I like to be woken in the morning with something gentle (currently Lazy Calm by Cocteau Twins). My current ringtone is Carnage Visors by The Cure, unless it's my wife calling as she gets her own ringtone to grab my attention.

I found Super Mario Bros ages ago and am currently using that.
However I have pilfered some sounds from PC Games.
My current message tone is UT2004 Weapon Spawn
My previous ring tone was the brass section of the BF1942 theme score (which I chopped up using Audacity)

Chopping up the sounds or music isn't so much the issue as the conversion to the iPhone format..

I used iRinger in the past - but wondered if there was another option. Last time I tried iRinger, it reported a virus / malware.

                        Some tones I've made:

                        • Foghorn Leghorn
                        • Marvin the Martian
                        • Mashup of a old ringer and Akmed the Terrorist "Silence I kill you."
                        • Fire station call out from the old TV show
                        • Text to voice for names

There's nothing really special about the iPhone ringtone's it's just apple's choice to use M4a as the native format for everything over mp3 like everything else so if you cut the song down and then transcode it to m4a just rename the m4a extension to m4r. You can even do it in iTunes using the Create AAC Version feature.
