Today's Random Discussion Point: Are Wigs Just Hairy Hats?

A wig can be used to keep your head warm.

Well a hat protects your head and is an accessory. . .
Hair is a protective accessory. That's exactly what hair does.

While wigs are meant to make you look as if you have hair, I don't think that they provide any real protection. . .
A wig can and does provide the same "protection" as a hat. Consider a skull cap or simple bob, what protection to they afford that a wig does not?
Ok. . . well a hardhat keeps your skull from being crushed by falling debris. Can a wig do the same?

No, but it can prevent you from getting skin cancer. Both results are typically the same, just that debris is typically faster than the cancer.

And so can sunblock on a bald head. So does that mean that sunblock is now a hat?

But can a baseball cap? Are you saying that baseball hats are not hats because they don't protect you from falling debris?
-
I'd say the average wig is thicker, and therefore more protective, than the average non-wig hat which is typically just thin material.

No, I'm saying hats have some form of protection. A baseball cap can help to protect your eyes from sunlight. No wig is designed with protection in mind. They are designed as a fashion piece.

More protective against what risk? Falling debris or sunburns/skin cancer?

A skullcap helps to keep the cold away and your head warm.
A hard hat helps to keep debris from making your skull into a cavity
A baseball cap helps to keep sunlight from your eyes
A wig does none of these by design. -

If this were a wig it could protect your eyes, and could be a squishy top providing better protection than nothing at all...

I propose that a hat is just a hairless wig. :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_closed_eyes:

This I can agree with if the goal is to accessorize one's head with an object, the goal being appearance over function.
-
Wig or hat?
...or perhaps this one is the top of Guy Fieri's head?

By this definition, sunglasses could also be labeled as a wig.

Wig or hat?
Hat.
It's a functional accessory first with the goal of being fucking stupid.

Sunglasses by design are to protect ones eyes from the sun. . . hence any fashion made after the initial creation is purely an adaptation of the function of what the base object is doing.
