Any thoughts about Chalet OS? It is based on Ubuntu 16.04. It looks very close to windows.

Ubuntu 16.04 isn't great, if you were going to be okay with older Ubuntu, I'd stick with Mint.

I wouldn't go the niche route. Stick with something solid like Ubuntu or Fedora with Cinnamon. You can't go wrong there.

Solus is nice but very, very niche as Tim says. It uses its own package system and isn't a part of either the Ubuntu or Fedora ecosystems meaning you can't get anything for it.

I get that. But my main reason, which I should of mention first was because of the Desktop Environments especially with Pantheon and Budgie.

Right now my 7 year old loves Elementary OS because of Pantheon. If that was available for Fedora that would be awesome.

Budgie is available with several other systems. No need to use the Solus underpinnings.

Pantheon is really nice too, but tied to Elementary. but Elementary uses Ubuntu, so your ecosystem isn't so limited.

I forgot Ubuntu Budgie is available and using Copr, Budgie is available for Fedora.

I've got my father's ancient precision laptop running Zorin. Set it to auto update and I haven't had to do anything with it. He uses it in the garage to look at service manuals.

I think GNOME 3 looks really nice and can look nicer with some tweaking.

Gnome 3 is definitely my favorite even without any tweaks.

That looks nice. Just updated my home laptop from Korora to Fedora and initially tried Gnome. I played with tweaking it a bit but really got annoyed with it and was taking more effort that I would have liked. I ended up resorting back to Cinnamon desktop as I like how it is setup default. May have to give it another shot though seeing how this desktop looks.

I can't stand any distro that puts that bar at the bottom, shrinking your windows. Gnome 3.26 on Fedora is where it's at.

That's my choice. By default the bar is only there when you hit the Windows button. This is with an extension called Dash to Dock and it's default is on the left side and hidden when a window is open.
