When you call the cops you give them the address you're at right?
Not in the real world, no. That's a television thing.
BAHAHAH you're insane.
You absolutely give them your address. Just because the police in developed areas can quickly pull your location doesn't mean that they are equipped to do so in the parts of the world where this would be critical.
Wait what? Your phone is registered and your info comes up on a screen. They ask you the current location just to confirm and to make sure they know who they are talking to. Even with cell phones they get the info the line is currently registered to and the GPS coordinates of the device or nearest cell phone tower.
This is the reason dialing 911 and leaving the phone off hook in the event of a break in or domestic issues is so important because it gets them to you with out you having to say anything.

In those parts of the world, it's even more critical to have GPS, because, as mentioned.. there are not streets for which to give an address on.
More critical for the police to have GPS. As a person who lives there, you simply need to know YOUR location.
That's theoretically useful in the case where you are sending a message in a bottle and somehow know your three word address and memorized it and you wont' move for years and hopefully someone gets that bottle and finds your note and sends the police. But for anyone with a phone, this is just silly.
You're being close minded and not seeing how people actually operate. In the ted talk he clearly talks about how emergency responders can't accurately get to where help is because of a lack of human readable addresses in many parts of the world.
Lat and Longitude are not "human readable" they may be Scott readable, but there aren't many Scott's out there.

Who the hell honestly knows how to go into their phone (SMS and voice only) and send their GPS coordinates or to even present them on the phone during an emergency.
No one, because it is unnecessary, because they get the GPS automatically at emergency services. If you needed it, though, it's pretty trivial to do.
Remember, you are talking about parts of the world where people do digital banking via SMS on their flip phones. They know how to use them, even if you don't.

@dustinb3403 said in Three Word Address:
You're making up some excuse where people just know everything about their device and can at an instance notice provide this information.
Um, yeah.

That's my point, scott flat out argued me that they don't ask for your current location.
Phones can be off by a lot in terms of GPS positioning. This is down to a 3 meter square.

Actually, I'm basing this off of the fact that I do consulting work around this exact kind of stuff in exactly these kinds of regions.
I think you are being suckered by a commercial and don't realize how much they are trying to sell you something without giving you a reason to want to buy it.

I'm not in a need to buy into such a system. I'm arguing the points made by the presenter.

They will ask but they don't need it. It's not something that's really important in the call and is never recorded outside of audio recordings.

Yes, but how do you know that wasn't off? It was derived from a phone in the first place.

@scottalanmiller really you work in many gutter cities around the world?

It's really just a placebo to make people who don't understand technology more comfortable and a double check that systems are working as expected. In many cases they need a room or suite or floor that GPS (and ergo three words) can't supply.

@scottalanmiller how is it you were amazed at Potty Plotter, but this is somehow not useful?

I'm not talking Rochester.
I'm talking places similar to this (not sure what this exact location is though)

I used to live one street over from a shanty town... no plumbing, no power, no addresses. Real world, exactly what Dustin is talking about. You don't take picturs in the shanty town itself. This is from my front door, but only minutes away on foot. Like ten houses down.

That's Rio in the picture. That's actually way more organized and upscale than I'm used to. That's not actually a shanty town at all, that's just a poor neighbourhood.
-
I'm talking places where people live without walls, where there is no structural house just siding leaning against each other maybe tied together with rope or whatever can be found, real shanty towns.
-
I was hanging out in a horrible mountain side shanty town (currogated three side deals, no doors, no water, no power) that was mostly families begging for field work once in a while and these kids were playing in some abandoned old religious building up the hill and came out and asked me to take their picture. I wouldn't take the camera out in the shanties themselves, no polite and not safe, but as these kids asked it was fine.
-
And in shanty towns like this, someone has a phone and they would have to in order to call for emergency services. If they had no phones, then the only hope would be finding a tuc tuc in the dark to take someone down the mountain. Bottom line... if they can call out they don't need the 3 words. And if they can't call out, the 3 words wouldn't have been useful.
-
This just seems ridiculous to me. If you tell me you live at blue.up.dog, I have no way to figure out how to get there. At least with street addresses you can tell where other streets intersect and are able to find things if you need to. With random words every 9 feet it’s impossible to know anything without looking at that map.
