@tim_g I had a Windows phone once. It was OK, but I probably wouldn't go back.

I did too, it was awful.

      I never did, thankful that I didn't.

I'm still on a Samsung Galaxy S5. The thing just will not die, gotta be 3 years old now. I've wipe and reload it a couple of times to bring it back to life and still getting good battery life off the original battery. However, I've been itching to upgrade it to a Google Pixel as well, and switch from AT&T to Google Fi with the Pixel.

I've also experience that touch interface issue when I had my iPhone 5c.
I would still add iPhone to your list of possible new phones.

How did I not hear about Google FI yet? Anyone here use it?

I love my Galaxy Note 4, until it died on me. I was forced to upgrade (for free) to the Note 5. That burned. Phone is sealed, so I can't add an SD card or change out the battery. Really felt that Samsung took a step back on that one.

I'm starting to itch for an upgrade as well, but either considering the Google Pixel (I'm still paranoid about Google) or going back to iPhone. Wife would go back to iPhone kicking and screaming as she had problems with hers but loves her Note 4, still has it by the way.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a very good reviews... but I'll stick with iPhone just because I already used to its interface + Apple Watch. I think it's more of what you will be doing with it. Big screen = Youtube/Netflex.

LOL, not for me. I rarely watch videos on my phone. Kills the battery to fast.

Think it also depends on what your going to use it for.

If its a mobile office then you might need a top range one. If its just call, text odd email and light browsing then a £60 phone might do, e.g. I had (until the little one broke her phone) I had a Doogee X5 pro from eBay and it did what I needed it to and smoothly.

Irrelevant as the issues were the malware ecosystem that Microsoft built. That it was technically inferior was not the problem. That MS made it just bad, period, is the issue and no amount of old or version or fixes will correct that. Once you can't trust the vendor, you can't trust it.

My phone is for its functionality, if I wanted a malware platform I don't need to pay MS for it.

In the past two years I've used

Samsung S4 - horrible - needed to be rebooted all the time, laggy, etc
Lumia 520 - laggy but otherwise very usable, had the few apps I wanted (outlook email, Starbucks, and normal built in apps)
Lumia 640 - less laggy than 520, very usable, same apps as 520
Google Nexus 6P - Great in the beginning, but after 6 months or so it was noticeably slower. I probably had 20 apps or so on it, outside the factory apps. Decent battery life, 24+ hours with good amount of use. Though when taking a lot of picture, lots of FB/picture uploads/chatting - probably around 6 hours until dead.
iPhone 6s - close to the same size as the 520, so a lot smaller than the rest. Lag is rare, but definitely no were near zero. Pretty much any app out there you want, great battery life. I can get nearly 2 days with low to moderate use. Heavy internet/uploading/photo taking, close to 6 hours until dead. This phone came to me 6+ months used with a cracked screen (haven't replaced the screen and still works 99+% of the time).

I've definitely had the least amount of issues with the iPhone compared to the rest. As much as I detest normal Apple users (not IT Apple users), smug bastards, I do have to admit after using this phone - yeah it's pretty damned awesome.

Both the iPhone and the Nexus 6P suffered from not being able to change certain aspects like ring tones to my personal choices versus just the built in ones (though I haven't tried that hard with the iPhone, so maybe it can now too), but my old Android phones and Windows phones all allowed me to use any wav/MP3 file as a ring/notification sound. sucks to be stuck with the crap default options.

I've moved two people off of iPhones to Google Pixel over the past two months. The first person would never go back to an iPhone after two months of usage. They really like it and it plugs into the Google ecosystem they had been using previously (which they hadn't been using to the full extent on iOS).

So a friend of mine has some something similar, but it was the Galaxy Note series phones - they loved the stylus, removing parallax from photos and a few other features, but now a year later - not sure what they think?

@dashrender The MS store was really bad. I know android gets a bad rep but it's a tiny percentage of apps that are malware. And even then you have to do something stupid to be infected.

That's an integral part of the experience. They didn't provide an alternative. So the store dictates the quality of the overall device.

The entire store was designed around delivering fake products (malware) to me. It was a platform designed for malware, and nothing BUT malware.

I recommend the Lumia 635 with Win 10.
Just look here, i have about 15 different choices when i search for the Opera browser. The store is amazing. Dozens of vpn app choices in there too.
