How would you spec this hardware

My thoughts:
1x 8 core CPU
32GB RAM (more if there is a deal, but no need to buy what I don't need)
XXX SSD in RAID5. -
Just to be annoying. Is there a reason you can't use a VPS provider?

In all honesty, I'd just buy a used system for a few hundred dollars unless they are picky about that. You can get R710s and DL380s for ~$200-300. It would end up just being a throwaway device.

Yes. There is hardware on site that will be talking to this server via TCP/IP. That hardware cannot hold data by itself long enough to survive Internet outages that have occurred in the past.
So this server will get the immediate data and then it will send it upstream and it can handle pretty much any length of outage.
If the hardware was able to hold a larger buffer of information, then we would only go with a single server in a colo or a VPS host.

The point is that the COST is the same or better a lot of times for the 8 core proc because of supply chain. I am not buying because of core count alone.

They probably are not making anything smaller which is why the older stuff that is smaller cost more .

Both of my R710s and my DL380 have 8 cores. The R710s were under $200 and the DL380 was like $230
