It's not quite as extreme, but you don't avoid Mass effect 1 just because mess effect 2 came out.

everyone but Scott got where I was going.
I am asking - for Scott - do I really care about playing AoE 1 when AoE 2 is out there, and we've been playing it as a group for ages
Yes, AoE 1 is a fantastic game with a good story and amazing game play. Rise of Rome had one of the best single player campaigns of any of the AoE series (and I'm including Age of Mythology). Well worth it if you haven't played it previously.
I don't play single player games, so You can have all the fun for me
Then I'm not so sure. I probably won't be purchasing it, because I own it already and I never really got into the multiplayer portion of it. It really depends on the price.

AoE 1 is set in the big ancient empires. Greece, Rome, Persia. Rather than the Middle Ages.

Why would AoE 2 take away from AoE 1? Different game in a different setting. Since AoE 2 is a sequel, not a version or update, why wouldn't AoE1 being updated like AoE2 be awesome?
I clearly got where you were going since I'm the first one to mention it. The issue is, it doesn't make sense.
Even though Command and Conquer games came out with new games - we almost never went back and played them because the new game was just so much better than the old one. it was just a re-skinning of the game, for example.
If you're telling me that AoE 2 was basically just a re-skinning of AoE 1 in a new location on the world, with minor tweaks, then yeah, perhaps it would be worth looking at.

They have different settings and some stuff. AoE 3 was so different that most don't even consider it part of the series.

It was an attempt to modernize the series... it didn't work out very well.

Where "modernize" is "pointless changes that didn't have any value."

AoE2 is modernized was past AoE3 at this point

Eh, they were trying to compete with a few other games in the genre at this point (Empire Earth being the big one that comes to mind). It didn't jive well with the fan base. I didn't mind AoE3 as much as everyone else. I enjoyed the single player and some of the usability/UI changes were welcome. Some of the gameplay changes were meh or just silly.

AoE3? The biggest problems were how much less intense it was and how simplified compared to 2.

No, the original AoE. But AoE 2 was great too.

I used to play original AoE with my friends over a 56K modem. You knew shit was about to go down when it got so laggy you couldn't do anything.
