Apple Completely Redesigning the Mac Pro Again
-
Ars Technica reports on how Apple is at it again redesigning their flagship desktop, the Mac Pro.
Wonders never cease. Apple, normally secretive to a fault and allergic to talking about future products before it considers them ready, summoned a small group of journalists from outlets including TechCrunch and Mashable to its headquarters earlier this month to tell them that the Mac Pro will once again be completely redesigned. But it isn't saying what the redesign will look like, and a new Mac Pro is not launching until sometime "next year."

Well since they've stopped coming up with anything truly new, there is hardly any reason to not try and drum up as much fanfare as possible.

Trashcan didn't sell like they were hoping to?
-
@coliver I believe that they sold decently well.

That was actually a really neat piece of hardware. That and the mini make a lot of sense. Their lack of middle ground is the biggest problem, I think.

This for sure. We have one being used as a webhost and build server for our iOS projects, but honestly a mini could do everything we use the pro for just as well.

@scottalanmiller According to John Grubers piece on it they designed themselves into a corner
But they were forthcoming about the fact that the current Mac Pro isn’t meeting the needs of all the users who need a Mac Pro. Federighi:
"I think we designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner, if you will. We designed a system with the kind of GPUs that at the time we thought we needed, and that we thought we could well serve with a two GPU architecture. That that was the thermal limit we needed, or the thermal capacity we needed. But workloads didn’t materialize to fit that as broadly as we hoped.
Being able to put larger single GPUs required a different system architecture and more thermal capacity than that system was designed to accommodate. So it became fairly difficult to adjust. At the same time, so many of our customers were moving to iMac that we saw a path to address many, many more of those that were finding themselves limited by a Mac Pro through next generation iMac. And really put a lot of our energy behind that." -

@travisdh1 Basically.
