Create isolated (wired) LAN for Guest Room?
-
I set up my current home network: Arris Docsis 3.0 Surfboard Modem with T-Moble Asus Router. I want to provide a wired connection for my guests that will NOT be able to get into my main network. I know how to create guest wi-fi access, but want to do this over ethernet.
What's the best -- and easiest way to do this? Looking into buying a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X. I'm no IT/newtworking genius, but always managed to teach myself what I need to get the job done.
Thanks. -
The simple approach would be a VLAN.

Now the question I have is why do you need a dedicated and separate LAN just for the room?
If you have Ethernet in this room you could setup a AP in the room, and have it broadcast the guest network. Which support AC wireless . .
So. . . . again why do you need a dedicated separated lan?

Nope never what the f*** gave you that idea?
Woodworking do exactly what he wants, yes. Simplest, Hell no.

@JaredBusch Why don't you agree?
VLAN's are very simple to setup, and don't require anything special. I'm willing to be enlightened tonight.
So go.

And what does "Woodworking do exactly what he wants, yes" mean?

Ok, I've been drinking so wasn't sure what the hell was going on. lol

@DustinB3403 We occasionally rent it out for AirBnB, and have friends of our children stay in it.

Well they may be simple to set up on the router they're very hard to deal with in the switching specially in a home where he probably does not have VLAN aware switches. So without that your choice is to take all of your equipment and put it on a VLAN and then leave the default VLAN for any guest equipment. That is not simple that's a pain in the ass

Gotcha, so a VLAN works, but you don't agree its a simple approach. So what would be more simple, creating a separate lan entirely?
While networking wise there would be 2 separate flat networks, this seems like way more effort to setup.

And while I agree having a dedicate Ethernet for the room is usable, do most of your clients walk in with desktops asking where they can connect to the dial up internet?

Correct because to continue my prior post, if your equipment is on the default VLAN then it's a pain in the ass to configure every guest device to be on the appropriate VLAN

-
The simplest solution for something at home like this would be to basic gigabit dumb switches both plugged into the router to separate physical LANS.
The firewall set up in the router will be the same whether it's the VLAN or a LAN.

When I talk slowly enough and enunciate the punctuation by actually saying the word period. Siri generally does not do too bad

Does the router he has offer the capabilities he'd need for this? I've never used anything from T-Mobile so I have no idea..
-
@JaredBusch Is this something a bright person without a whole lot of network customization experience could set up? I'm up for the challenge -- set up my own home network. If so, what is the recommended hardware, and a resource for doing the customiazation?

I have no clue, but for $60 you get something awesome.
