OpenMediaVault

Looking into my next first project of 2017 and speaking with my dad while working on his computer. He mentioned the 'ordeal' he has in moving files back and forth between his desktop and laptop(s), and the wife's MAC Pro.
So, why not a rPi NAS rather than a full NAS system. I do have an old SimpleTech NAS, but the dang thing is like twelve years old, and not about to drop that old thing on him. Not to mention, the drive format isn't something that can be connected to any other device and accessed.
Has anyone used OpenMediaVault previously? I didn't locate any tags or topics on the matter, and am looking for some feedback prior to starting the project.

I guess how is this better then NextCloud?

Excellent question. I don't know, which is partly why I ask. Thanks for the pointer back to NextCloud - a community Member.

Right, NextCloud is a known software with tons of guides in this community. This seems akin to FreeNAS or OpenFiler.

I'm completely open to options,.. I started at Google and OpenMediaVault was the first few options of mention. I admit that it had slipped my mind about NextCloud.
Guess it's time to spin up a VM and look it over,.. which I had planned to do prior to the holiday,.. but had forgotten the product.

There appears to be an ISO for the Pi. Depending on the model that you have.
I've never heard of it, but its the top google search for just OpenMediaVault (it tries to fill in Pi)

There is even a forum topic about getting NextCloud running on the pi... that's pretty cool.

I have used omv in my test lab here and at home a bit. The test lab it worked well, but i just ended up using ubuntu and iscsi when i had to put something in production. omv just has a web interface, some plugins to turn on. Sort of like webmin lite but for only storage. Development seems active; they keep producing new builds.
At home i installed it as a vm for a bit but when i broke my Xenproject i ended up reformatting that drive and omv with it.
