What does everyone think of his findings?

I'm wondering where he got his "floor" number from is about all I could quibble with. That's going to change a lot depending on what area of the country the location is in.

Just off the top of my head. They put a small new building up on the property a few years back.
Building and basic infrastructure cost: $5000.00 (12'x30' block)
8kw emergency generator and installation: $3000.00
        HVAC: $900.00

So, this area of the country call it 10k just for a room to put the stuff in. Double that if you need an offsite facility.

So I'm wrong. Between building costs at 20k, and a @scale cluster, that's real close to 50k.

The bigger issue that I see is that this compares a LOT of things at once... it's assume on-premises with your own non-cloud cluster and hosted, public cloud for the other. Too many variables. You'd never really compare one to the other. You'd actually compare hosted hyperconvergence and public hosted cloud. Much more comparable meeting the same needs.

When you need a public cloud, on premises doesn't meet the need well. When you need on premises, cloud might not even be an option. Comparing costs of such wildly different things doesn't mean much as you are delivering different services between the two approaches.

But when do you need public cloud? I know you're going to say, everyone should be there... please provide more 🙂

When you need elastic scalability without the cost of private cloud.

                uh... OK.

What about those that don't need that?
Can you compare a self hosted solution to anything? other than another self hosted solution?

Those that don't need that and aren't looking for public hosting of resources, it makes no sense.

Not clear on what you are asking.
