I asked my friend if that was food or bait when she texted it to me... I'd have a little bite of fresh perch sashimi.
I've had a little sushi. Not really my cup of tea, but not bad either.
I've eaten a slice off the dorsal side of a king mackerel that I caught, right on the boat. That was the freshest thing I've ever tried. 10/10, would do again.
^ this is also my concept of sushi. 10/10 do recommend.
You throw that on rice and it essentially is sashimi
don't forget the wasabi and pickled ginger, yummm

I found out that slicing a fish offshore in FL is a big no-no... the boat Captain freaked when he saw what I was doing. But I didn't care, and that piece of fish would have been worth the cost of a ticket if we got caught.
That's odd, I wonder why it's not allowed. You're not taking the head off or making it hard to identify.
I believe the letter of the law in FL says the fish must be whole. It's probably aimed at on boat processing of fish to ignore the limit. But we got away with it.

Sashimi is the raw fish. Sushi is the rice, prepared with a mix of sugar and vinegar, which is often served with raw fish.

Yeah, sashimi is just sliced fish. Sushi is the little rice logs w fish on top (or rolls). But as long as it tastes good....

Is Nigri when the fish is placed over the top of a rice log?

Yes. The rolls are called maki.

Although one of my favorite pieces of sushi is tamago... A heavenly little sweet egg omelette, folded just so and sliced to make slabs for nigiri.

Let's assume this was fish instead of egg.
Would this be sushi or sashimi?

I guess the terminology gets mixed up in some places... I'm lucky to live where there is a huge Asian population, so I learned this stuff pretty early on. Sushi/sashimi was my first foray into exotic food as an adult (17-18 ish).
