Elastix 5 Dials 3CX for its Telephony Engine

Basically Elastix is gone, and 3CX is taking over.....

Yeah, but if you wanted that, you'd just use 3CX itself, right? What is the reason for adding Elastix to the mix, especially when Elastic now has a track record of thrashing and disaster.

Agreed.

I can't even figure out what extra functionality they are pretending to be adding. It seems like they are just mentioning 3CX Free edition and nothing else.
-
Yeah Elastix 5 is pretty much 3CX free, they are not even supporting it themselves.
3CX South America will assume the commercial operations surrounding Elastix including support, sales & distribution of Elastix 5. Support packages & Trainings for older Elastix versions will continue to be serviced by Megatelcon / Palosanto. Elastix resellers can sign up as 3CX resellers to enjoy free training, NFR licenses and support here.

What is "Elastix support" now that there isn't an Elastix, though? It's just rebranding.

As stated in another thread...
I'm quite aware of 3CX. I specifically chose Elastix for SMB client over 3CX due to it being open source and unlimited functionality previously. In my eyes, the change to 3CX is nail in the coffin for future editions of the Elastix brand and features / capability for the unlimited functionality. I understand this is business, but in a true open source environment, there's always options. We will continue with our clients on the current Elastix 2.4 and 2.5 branch; however, we have no plans to go to 3CX. It's nothing personal. If I wanted a commercial offering, 3CX would not be a choice. There's Digium, even Asterisk.org, Askozia, and general FreePBX. There are options, and I'm sure more will be coming soon or are available.
I just went to PIAF web site and the same thing happened - 3CX bundled in. Did 3CX just sweep the two obvious Open Source option for VoIP / Telephony solution?
WTH, Where have I been?!!!!!!!!!!

Sort of, but both of those were dead already. FreePBX is fully open source, totally free and unlimited and killed PIAF and Elastix off a few years ago. Elastix would have been okay but failed to make Elastix 3 work, and Elastix 4 never really got out the door. So the 3CX is just a last ditch attempt to not totally go under.
-
And PIAF was the goofy "build it yourself" version of FreePBX. Just silly. Why build it yourself and have things go wrong when FreePBX was totally free and open and did it all for you and had the ability to update, get support, has a community, etc.?
-
When it came to the open source GUI, Elastix is among the best - telephony wise, the best. The draw for Elastix was their very aesthetically built user interface. There is nothing close; FreePBX is not close. Under the hood they can be driven by same engine, but Elastix was the best in terms of cohesive and beautiful interface. Open source has great tools and backends, but 90+ or more percent lack the real draw for first time adopters - gorgeous / aesthetic / easy GUI.

Both are so bad I barely notice the difference. No idea why the overall interfaces are so weak.

I posted a comment on alternative solutions and words of why not using 3CX and how they scooped up PIAF and Elastix, and they deleted my comment quickly. That is a sign for sure that Elastix is DEAD and have been gobbled up by 3CX monsters - http://www.elastix.org/community/threads/what-if-3cx-acquired-elastix.132897/ - I gave options and opinions and they deleted. Actually - BANNED - wow! Just to give them alternatives and opinion of 3CX! The above post is what I posted - 10th one down.

We used to be a 3CX partner but they wouldn't allow us to continue to be partners if we wouldn't lie about their product. Needless to say, we were not impressed. Unethical, unprofessional company. Their PBX kinda works okay, but for the money it's garbage. Even their paid version wasn't remotely as good as FreePBX is or Elastix was. Terrible interface, very hard to use.

Not to "toot" our own horn or anything but some others might find this interesting/useful.

One point of note here @scottalanmiller PBX in a Flash existed a long time before FreePBX was a distro of its own. But yes, once FreePBX existed as a distro, there was never any other reason to do anything else.
