Nintendo hasn't had a good console since the SNES in my opinion. The N64 was better than anything since then, but was nothing but a gimmick, the SNES era was the last time that Nintendo bothered to care about making good games. Everything past the SNES has been dependent on gimmicks to sell what are otherwise absolute garbage games.

How DARE you talk smack about the N64! That was the console of my generation, easily.

And it had what game on it really worth playing?

I admire Nintendo's insistence on taking risks in what seems to be a stagnant console war, and I think that the Switch as an idea is great--being able to take your "home console" anywhere--but what it ultimately comes down to is game selection, and theirs isn't great.

Is "relying on gimmicks" really "taking risks", though? If anything, isn't "avoiding doing a good job" the worst form of stagnation?

I loved Nintendo back in the day (NES, SNES). This new thing, in my humble opinion, looks hideous.

If I could multiple-up-vote something, this would be it.

NES was definitely good in its era, but mostly because of the games, not the hardware. The hardware was barely ahead of the Atari 2600, but they had bigger carts with more on them. The hardware was reliable and cheap and just worked, even if it was really basic.

The SNES, to me, was the highlight. Good enough hardware to allow for awesome games while not being "too much" to make gimmicks useful. So many SNES games were just super solid. The hardware allowed for good 2D graphics, great audio, super useful and comfortable controllers and the carts allowed for good games that actually had stories and details and stuff. It was a great era where there was enough hardware that making a game was not a technical challenge but there were no gimmicks so it all came down to making good games. It was an awesome time.

To really shake up the market Nintendo needs to look at putting their backlog to mobile and PC. That would take Nintendo from a distant fourth in the hardware business to a serious competitor in the software business.

Problem is... tons of their games are actually terrible and only sold because there was no competition. Of those that were okay, the majority rely on hardware gimmicks not available on phones or PCs. So porting the games is very, very hard. Anything since the Wii or DS era and you are seriously hampered in getting those games to another platform. Older stuff like GBA and GameCube you can port pretty easily.

So even series that people liked, it would be a struggle to get the full series ported. And everything would need to be totally revamped or it would showcase how poor the graphics were in the originals.
