Tablet or small laptop for 1st grader

@garak0410 I haven't looked into it much yet, but tried the family thing last night. My first order of business though will be to filter internet at my house so he doesn't accidentally stumble upon something on the internet. Was thinking OpenDNS or some other free DNS filter.

@fuznutz04 I use Dyn's Internet Guide at home on a separate SSID/VLAN for the "family" wifi, so far that is working well.

My daughter is in second grade and used to use a Chromebook, but has been mostly on iPads until now. This year we got her a Windows 10 laptop to use.
-
@scottalanmiller Any specific reason for the Win10 laptop VS something else?
-
There are a number of cases that you can use with your tablet - many I have seen for the iPad itself are rather robust in that they can survive a real thrashing.

We replaced an older, lightweight laptop, so we gave it to her. We homeschool, and I use some curricula with online components so it made sense for her to have her own laptop. She also has an iPad and a kindle Fire.

@Dominica Good to know. He has a kindle as well, but mostly uses it for watching movies. It's older and is showing it's age in performance.

She has lots of educational resources that are Windows-only, so stuck with that for a lot of her for now.

@scottalanmiller Makes sense.

We use iPads for the kids. They don't know the passwords, and I add all websites in manually.

@jt1001001 Thanks, I'll check those guys out. And I like the idea of having a separate WLAN for the kiddos.
