Cisco has been investing in new products such as data analytics software and cloud-based tools for data centers, to offset the impact of sluggish spending by telecom carriers and enterprises on its main business of making network switches and routers.
Here's an idea. Don't make junk that's super expensive and people won't be sluggish to buy it.
Ubiquiti Mic dropped.
My CDW rep called yesterday - I grabbed the phone before looking at it. I decided to tell him that I was interested in a quote for 15 UAP-AC Pros. He went on a 10 min side track about all the brands they sell and that he had to get me a call with his engineer (i.e. other sales gorilla). I read between the lines, there's not enough margin in UBNT stuff, so I really need to move you to a more expensive brand.
I told him that I really needed a vendor partner that would listen to my requests and sell me what I ask for. If I ask for options (which I should never do with them - instead I should be paying NTG for options), then I would be willing to hear about options. He didn't seem to like that so much, but told me he would get me a quote right over. It's been 30+ hours and nothing.

Why are you wanting to buy a Pro over the LITE? $149 versus $89
Do you honestly need that much bandwidth? or foresee the need for that much bandwidth?
-
@Dashrender are you buying for the future? That is not usually a good thing.

Agree, unless the future is within say 90 days and really certain, buy for today, not for the future. And when buying for the future, consider just stalling.
-
To save others from searching for the differences..
There are 2 basic differences.
The Pro is 802.3af/at compatible and get full AC bandwidth capabilities at 1300mbps
The Lite is 24V passive, so your standard PoE switch will not work, and only get 867mbps.

LITEs require the non standard POE switches to power them.

True, but low cost UBNT ones work fine.

You are paying $900 more ($60 x 15 units) for PoE.
You can buy a 16 port EdgeSwitch for $299

Interesting.
I was doing it because I didn't want to be stuck with the 24v standard, sticking instead to the POE/POE+ standard. But, moving to UBNT switches is probably really worth the savings.
though using the UBNT switches, while a little more expensive might be nice for the reporting they provide in the UBNT console.

And you get an extra switch out of the deal for "free".

You are mixing things up again. That is UniFi, not EdgeSwitch.
-
I REALLY want them to bring out a Unifi non POE switch.
How can I justify a £300-£400 price increase for a feature they just won't ever use or need?
Yes we have the edgeswitch but then you lose the reporting and central controller concept.

That's why I said it was "a little more expensive" I changed from the Edge to Unifi.

Same here.

Wonder why they went away from the POE/POE+ standard. Are you stuck using their poe injectors and switches or are there other vendors that use this standard?

I would guess any POE injector would work for the AP's. But you're probably losing some functionality.

From what I can tell 24 volt is a standard, I've seen a few others out there, but I just ask - WHY! Why not use POE or POE+

I think @scottalanmiller or @JaredBusch mentioned in a past thread that the 24v standard is used most in the WISP and antenna arena. So it was probably something they were familiar with/had the parts for.

This is correct. This 24V passive PoE is nothing new. the WISP market used it for years to power devices before the current standards were ratified. Cisco also has a pre-standards PoE protocol.
-
Does the WISP market still use 24V passive PoE currently use it or have they moved away from it?
