Walking Dead Plot Holes - How would IT folk survive
-
For starters we'd constantly use logic / this brute force your way into a semi-safe setup just wouldn't fly. It'd be comparable to using RAID6 on a production environment with 40x8TB drives and a single backup target over USB 3.0, sure it might work, but WTF...
- None of this shooting / running / screaming.
- We'd build a strong hold / find one (prison)
We'd find all of the access areas to the strong hold and reinforce them, including finding the keys (passwords) and make sure they're hardened.
We'd get armored up with plenty of weapons to use to kill of the zombies (viruses). Guns, metal spikes, swords what have you.
We'd build some honeypots that the viruses could get trapped on near the perimeter, maybe dig some trenches to trap a few hundred in etc.
Then we'd begin the testing of our firewall.
We'd get to a point where we can fortify the base but still very easily kill the zombies.
So if you think of a prison, each cell is essentially it's own strong hold. The doors, the gates, the fences. All of it. All of which are difficult to get pass (much like a well configured security system)
So we'd have a large array of weapons to use to kill zombies, traps to catch and then kill etc.
At which point we'd want to clear our area of zombies so we have some breathing room. So we'd have to attract some attention from the zombies.
Once we have a large wave of them ~2000 or so, we just sit fortified, and kill zombies all day / night until we want to sleep.
Go into our cells, lock the cell doors and sleep with some ear plugs in.
Rinse and repeat until all of the zombies are gone for a wide area.
Sure there might be a straggler here or there, but 1 zombie versus 5+ IT people doesn't stand a chance.
What do you guys think / any plot holes here? Excluding other humans (users) from messing up the entire plan.

As is the real "Walking Dead" ... that is always the bigger concern.
-
Not to mention zombies on a treadmill with brains hanging in front of them as a source of infinite energy.
-
@Nic But how do you get the brains to not spoil?
Presumably the zombies don't want rotten flesh. And more importantly, how do you get fresh brains?

That's what puts IT people in so much danger, more brains

You missed a strategy for food.

Technically you don't need brains on the treadmill, I was just thinking of a comic I saw. The zombies just need to know you are inside and the treadmills have to be pointed towards the fortress. Your lovely brains wafting over the walls are all that is needed.

Good point, but it's really simple.
We'd use modern Hydroponics where we grow food using LED water troughs. Like here
-
And solar power to to power the LED's.
-
Also the answer to users in a zombie apocalypse would be as zombie bait, so we could power those treadmills.... lol

Takes time, a lot of time. Long term it might work if you really know what you are doing and have agricultural engineers with you.

By cutting open the skulls of stupid people. Easy peasy.

Those agricultural engineers fall into the IT folk category.

Hydroponic is a super easy way to grow if you have electricity and proper liquid nutrients.

Also while the modern hydroponics system is being setup / growing you could supplement the food of the region with roof top gardens.
Which are well behind your fortified area.

That's slower still. You'd be living off of the hydroponics before that roof top food was available. It's getting through till the farming takes off that is the problem.

It might be, but if you're working on getting power / fortifications in place, you'd want the users to be useful. They can move dirt and make a basic roof top garden that would support the region.
Also there are about 6 million walmarts in every direction.
Not to mention the countless farms in almost every region.

you can do it without electricity pretty easily. you can substitute fish / aquaculture for the nutrient liquids if you really, really know what you are doing.
But yeah, access to the manufactured chemicals would be the killer. That would be harder to obtain than just normal food in that situation.
FYI... grew up on a farm, family has been farmers since before coming to the new world in 1635. I've visited and studied both of the NASA research hydroponic facilities, toured commercial hydroponics, done some study of hydroponics at Cornell (not as a student) and have read every major textbook on them on the market

Farms would be picked clean in no time and very dangerous. Walmarts would be empty on day one.

Walmarts would be, yes, but user vehicles / homes would be stocked full.
Also IT people would presumably have a large horde of supplies if something like this did occur.
