I didn't realize you could even get data center OEM. Makes no sense. Standard can make sense if you get it cheap bundled with a server.. But datacenter no way.

DC might actually make more sense. With Standard you are typically in a small shop and need it to move around. DC is generally for big shops where they might actually do a "license every device" approach and it not be as bad as it sounds.

I can see a case for DC OEM, the price difference between OEM and VL is only $1300ish... prob not enough to justify losing the VL benefits.

The only one I can think of is the ability to move it to new hardware. But seriously, if you have DC on all the hardware and one completely dies and cannot be part swapped to recover, then just buy another copy of DC. Generally you will never need worry about it until you get new hardware in 5+ years.

I think that this is mostly like desktops and the DC OEM might actually make some sense . If you are dedicated to Windows everywhere (or everywhere on a specific farm like in an enterprise) and have support agreements on the hardware, the lower cost of the license might actually make sense here.

Downgrade rights is the only other benefit I can think of.

One could argue that in many cases getting downgrade rights just enables doing things poorly or lazily. Sometimes not getting them is kind of a good thing.

Moving hardware. We replace servers every three years. So this would suck. Also not having down grade rights is a deal breaker for us.

EA starts off pretty low, at like 250 users you can get in on it at some level.

Although to consider the DC OEM useful, you'd need to be pretty large in most cases.
