This isn't a complaint, just commentary and a request.

I have a 5+ year old HP Probook 4710s with an Intel WiFi link 5100 wireless adapter. Unfortunately Windows 10, while it does seem to see it and install a driver for it, won't work.

This laptop is used in a highly mobile fashion and the user is not as graceful as some, so installing a USB adapter that sticks out 2+ inches isn't tenable.

If you have a recommendation (hopefully with personal experience) on a micro USB WiFi adapter, I'd be willing to give that a try.

I've used the TP-Link and it is totally worthless. Worst WiFi adapter I've ever tried. It's the little tiny micro one that you can barely get your fingers on to pull out of the USB slot.

I've tried this micro adapters on mice too. As long as the mouse is within 1-2 feet they seem to work great, but if you're using it with a desktop that is on the floor, they become completely unpredictable and basically useless.

Perhaps I'm asking to much from a micro adapter to think there is a WiFi one that will work worth a hoot.

There is not very much room for an antenna. That has to make it pretty hard to get it to work well.

Can you replace the built in WLAN card?

Of course the other question is,.. does the user have to have Windows 10? If there is no requirement for maintaining Win10, downgrade to the previous version.

Yeah I guess that looks possible - assuming HP doesn't lock the BIOS to specific cards as I've heard Lenovo does (I got lucky when I upgraded mine - see Lenovo builds spyware into wifi driver).
