    • RE: How to authenticate via AD to non-domain server

Just joined to domain and still having same issue. I even limited my own account to just bookstack and it wouldn't let me log in. Error says "These credentials do not match our records". As soon as I remove Log On To restrictions, these accounts can sign in.

Verified domain join by running id DOMAIN\\user and ensured I was getting user properties back.

Followed these steps to join to domain... https://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=Ubuntu_18.04&p=realmd

Server gets IP from DHCP, there's a new computer entry in AD further verifying it successfully joined domain, and I also verified the DNS entry for the server. Not having passed AD authentication before for a scenario like this, not sure if this is typical or some issue with bookstack authentication specifically.

Can you use RADIUS? Was able to get our firewalls to authenticate VPN users against Microsoft's RADIUS implementation and validate against specific security groups in AD.

Don't currently have RADIUS setup, so this seems to be the long way around the issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

Interesting the use of "Log On to", I am not sure you can without joining the domain or having a DNS entry.

It has a DNS entry, but still doesn't work. I'll just join to domain and see how that goes.

Ubuntu 18.04 on VMware. Would consider joining to domain if it's the easier option. Just didn't know if it was something basic I was missing.

      Keepass is free....

As is Bitwarden. But they do have premium features I'll consider paying for later. Plus just support open source projects financially if I end up keeping it.

    • How to authenticate via AD to non-domain server

Best title I could come up with, but specifically the issue I'm having is with Bookstack LDAP authentication. In AD, most of our user accounts are limited to what machines they can logon to via the "Log On To..." function. We'll generally input the machine or machines their account can log in to on the list and we're good. In every previous case, the machines they were logging into were domain joined so we just input the computer name and moved on. With this new install of Bookstack, if I enter the computer name, I still can't log in. I'm guessing it has to do with the fact the server isn't joined to the domain. If I remove the "Log On To" restriction, it logs in fine.

Anyone run across this and can point out what I'm missing?

      Was it this one? https://mangolassi.it/topic/17023/vultr-fedora-image

I think you could look at it both ways. Their image COULD be customized to work better on their servers if they've tried to tweak it to do so. Your custom ISO you know is untampered with. I guess it really just depends on your personality and preference as well as the experience others have had.

There's another thread on here where they compared the images of "Stock OS" vs Custom ISO, and noted that they weren't exactly the same. There were some additional packages in the VPS providers version. I believe they were comparing an iteration of Fedora server if I remember correctly.

In that same thread, the consensus was that by installing the VPS ISO, you're relying on the VPS provider to deliver a clean ISO without any additions. For those who may be more security conscious, uploading your own ISO was the preferred method.

Now to go find that thread...

I'm assuming you're aware of all other "limitations" of BP vs E3 such as not being able to manage Office Business via Group Policy, maximum of 300 users, etc. None of these are a deal breaker for us, but just making sure.

Your Office version will change from ProPlus to Business. Not much difference for most people. It should be painless enough to reinstall using their deployment tool.

      https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/overview-of-the-office-2016-deployment-tool

      • Our on premise exchange would not be accessible from the outlook clients anymore since the business premium is only cloud based

I've only used Business Premium and don't have local Exchange, but I'm not sure why this would be true. It doesn't make sense so I would verify.

      • we have some internal services that rely on our on premise exchange server to send some automated email (ie. Veeam Backup Notifications), would them be influenced by these changes?
      • we have some distribution group configured on the on premise exchange, would them be influenced by these changes?

Maybe during the transition from E3 to BP, but otherwise no shouldn't have any effect.

      • Some users don't work on their local machine, they instead RPD to a way more powerful Hyper-V VM (one VM for each user), will this still work with Business Premium licenses?

Yes, Business Premium now allows shared licensing... https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-365-Business-Blog/Shared-Computer-Activation-for-Office-in-Microsoft-365-Business/ba-p/472994

You download the software to run the smart watch .

My Fitbit has an app that runs on an Android phone. It does not run Wear OS. It runs its own OS that then communicates with my Android phone via the Fitbit app in the Google Play Store. The same appears to be true about the Amazfit watch.

My moto Runs Wear OS - Had to download the Wear OS as an App onto my Smart Phone to get it to sync with the Watch that was already running Wear OS. So you're basically saying that I need to have 2 OS's on my phone , one to run the watch then another to run the phone?

Which.. Isn't that the same thing that your fit bit is doing... ?

Yes, your Moto 360 is running Wear OS (likely Android Wear technically depending on updates it's received lately). I did not realize you had to install a Wear OS app on your phone to get it to sync. I understand now why my analogy might have been confusing.

No, you don't need two OS's on your phone. You need one on your phone (Android) and one on your watch (Wear OS, FitbitOS, or Amazfit's proprietary OS). However, in order to have the full functionality of seeing all your data from your phone, that's where installing the Amazfit Watch app comes in.
