Well, I deal with the people most resistant to change and they deal with people in mom and pop shops that are also resistant to change. You want me to scan then e-mail? Why can't I just do one step and fax it?

RE: Anyone Still Use Faxing?posted in IT Discussion
Unfortunately we are still using faxing. Argh. I still have 3 actual fax machines in 2 departments and we have a FaxFinder appliance with two modems that we have some DIDs going to. I was able to convince a user to let go of a rarely-used fax about 2 months ago after he moved offices. I played to his cheapness when I explained that it would cost almost a couple hundred to move the line to his new office. He said forget it. Winner!

RE: Do you backup your cloud servers?posted in IT Discussion
I was wondering why the hell anyone would want to spend money on all SSD for owncloud. LOL.

RE: Do you backup your cloud servers?posted in IT Discussion
@aaronstuder Well then. I am glad I am not crazy or stupid. Do they not offer them anymore?

RE: Do you backup your cloud servers?posted in IT Discussion
@aaronstuder Thanks. Not sure why I didn't see the "sata" packages.

For example, I just setup OwnCloud on Vultr
Do I need you back it up? or am I over thinking it?
Is backup Vultr's job or mine? Should I trust my provider?
Curious about your owncloud configuration. How much storage are you paying for? Is vultr only all SSD?

RE: CAT6 End to End?posted in IT Discussion
I use Cat6 here and the cable is a little thicker and the individual strands for the cable I get are 23 AWG so they are a little more work to crimp the RJ45 ends on because they don't straighten as easily as 24 AWG. Patching is just as easy as Cat5E.

RE: Fundamental Difference in the Mindset for Updates of Linux vs. Windows Adminsposted in IT Discussion
@scottalanmiller I have avoided bad updates by waiting a week or two and googling the updates that show in my WSUS. If I worked with a team of people who only did help desk, I would be more willing to take the leap. That being said, I do have critical updates set to automatically download and install for all clients. Servers I do regularly and manually. Critical updates appear less often and are fewer in numbers compared with other updates that seem to cause the problems.

RE: Considering FileMaker or Access for a Starter Databaseposted in IT Discussion
I have supported FM server here for the past 5.5 years (Versions 10-13, so far). It is OK from a small-scale perspective but like you said above, you don't want to look small-scale, especially since you will almost surely trap yourself. As far as I can tell, FM does not scale well. Our FM guy is a co-owner and taught himself how to create and maintain FM databases and he is pretty good at it. However, I am sure there are things he has done that were taking the long way around with a sort of house of cards effect. I would say that over half of our business relies on the 25 or so databases he has created.
We also use an ERP program, Southware (which seems horribly antiquated) for things like inventory, AR and AP. The only thing I do for that is deploy the thin-client software and maintain the windows server that it runs on, as we have a consultant company that specializes in it. We have tried to move off it several times but since we have customized it so much, we are pretty much stuck with it.

RE: Ubiquiti Switchesposted in IT Discussion
Newegg is good to southern California. Unless it comes from TN or another warehouse, even the ghetto shipping option will get here next day. As far as I can tell, you won't know which warehouse until after it ships.

Last week, when I checked, there were varying ETA dates for amazon, newegg (US) and other sites I checked.

RE: Ubiquiti Switchesposted in IT Discussion
@brianlittlejohn Yeah these things are in short supply. The ERX is $10-$15 more than MSRP, IF you can find it in stock.

RE: Ubiquiti Switchesposted in IT Discussion
@MattSpeller @JaredBusch In all honesty, I got the LR because it was the one that was in stock and was only a few bucks more. Is it that much better in terms of signal range? Probably not, but I was really tired of my old setup and I am happy with this one.

RE: Ubiquiti Switchesposted in IT Discussion
I just purchased my ERX and an AP-AC-LR for home. It was troublesome to setup at first until I realized that eth0 was meant for WAN (I was trying to setup eth1) Once I got that, everything fell into place and I am super happy so far. Got zoneedit for DDNS setup and the AP is using the POE passthrough. This setup blows my old Asus RN66U out of the water. And it is cheaper.

@scottalanmiller So what are you using now?
Nothing, we dropped the LAN model and have no need for a unified IP addressing scheme any longer.
So if you did have a need for a unified IP addressing scheme, would you be using ZeroTier or something else?

RE: Pertino - Is Anyone Successfully Using Any Version Above 510 with DNS/AD Connect?posted in IT Discussion
@scottalanmiller I gotcha. I meant in terms of the topology being, I have an appliance or server onsite that acts as a gateway for the connection of remote clients to access the LAN.

@scottalanmiller I completely understand that. I have been trying to get rid of it for awhile. It was here when I got here.
Edit: hence the term "God-forsaken"
