Is it common that you have to open the back cover on a Brother printer in order to send envelopes through? Is this common on most laser printers? The below video shows and example of what I am talking about. A client called asking me why the envelopes come out all crinkled when they print. I sent them this video. I kind of feel like that is a pain but if that is common in all or most laser printers what can you do right?

      Youtube Video

Maybe common for brother printers, but I haven't seen that. Usually, Tray 1 is for one-offs and envelopes, and is located on the front side (usually vertical when closed), above the horizontal tray 2.

A simple restart command doesn't perform the update step, just the restart, so the update doesn't get applied.

This has been an issue for a very long time with windows. I am surprised it hasn't been fixed yet. It's really annoying

Well, at least with Win 7, a standard reboot applies updates. At least, I think it does. The main difference between Win 7 and 10, is that they have switched to the osoclient.exe to manage the updates.

I'm pretty sure server 2008 and onward had the issue. I don't remember dealing with it on workstations

I still have a 2008 R2 box and can test it on the next go 'round. I won't have it much longer, as I am dumping it prior to EOS.

      Hoping someone can help?

Have a problem with password expiration and Remote Desktop Services/Terminal Server users and their passwords.

RDS/TS users don't receive password expiring notifications when they log in. This is a hassle as obviously, they won't change their password before it expires and also, it's impossible for them to change is once it expires unless they have access to a domain joined PC, which several of them don't as they are 3rd party contractors.

There are a powershell scripts and free tools around to service this need, but powershell scripts can become railroaded and free tools don't always offer enough functions.

Wondering what others have done to solve this problem?

      Thanks.

If you have to expire passwords, I have good success with Netwrix's password expiration notifier. They have a free and paid version. Obviously, the paid version offers more features, but I used the free one for a few years until I ditched password expiration policies.
      https://www.netwrix.com/netwrix_password_expiration_notifier.html
The paid version is actually part of another product:
      https://www.netwrix.com/active_directory_auditing.html

      Thanks @wrx7m for the reply.

Due to a number of reasons i've decided to a PS1 script to assign new passwords.

You should post your script on ML

      Looks like this might work.

      USOClient.exe RestartDevice

After doing some digging into the UOSClient, it looks like the restartdevice switch only work for rebooting for a feature update. I have one device that I have that is still pending a reboot to update from 1809 to 1903. I will try it out if the user doesn't beat me to it.

@magicmarker said in Turn off old ERP system running on Win2008R2 and view the exported data:

@DustinB3403 The new ERP system is SAP. The SAP consultants are long gone now and technically the archived data on the old ERP isn't necessary to be imported into the new SAP system. You know how it goes, sometimes you need to look back at a old data to help you with something else. We just wanted to turn off the old Windows 2008R2 servers yet still give the users access to the old data if necessary. I will have to see how large the exported CSV files turn out to be. A nice simple solid option rather than going through all the steps to setup a Fedora DB server though.

If they don't need to run reports and whatnot, it seems a CSV could be the best option.

Is this specific to Hyper-V or is that even related to the way this works?

That is a good question. I would only have one host, so... if there isn't a benefit to a single server, then I won't be using it.

I believe you can change settings on the collection to use UPD later. The caveat being there is no import of profile so when you do that everyone is starting fresh.

That is good to know. I was toying with using it on my new RDS deployment.

      Also curious about this.

Related to the Windows updates, I just do that after the MDT deployment, using GPO to specify the WSUS group and server and then use PSWindowsUpdate powershell module to check for updates.

Fedora 31 Release Held Up By Installer + DNF Bugs
      https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Fedora-31-Release-Delayed

*Fedora developers had been trying to ship Fedora 31 for their original release target of next Tuesday, 22 October, but that isn't going to happen due to remaining blocker bugs.

At today's meeting they decided F31 is a "No-Go" due to open issues.

Among the blocker bugs at this point are upgrade issues over libgit2.so.28()(64bit) not being found, a DNF exception around armv7hcnl, a dnf-yum upgrade issue from Fedora 30, dnfdragora having complaints about a locked process after updates, and a Fedora 31 KDE Live graphics issue when booting in BIOS mode, among other proposed blockers.*

@Pete-S said in Can I use the first IP in a subnet, for instance 192.168.0.0?:

Is it possible / bad practice to use the first address in the network, for instance 192.168.0.0 (netmask 255.255.255.0) ?

If I remember correctly a long time ago it wasn't possible but nowadays it is. I never use it but when you have small subnets like /29 it could be nice.

@Pete-S : The short answer is No. The longer answer is that it depends on the math.

In 192.168.0.0/24, 192.168.0.0 is the network address... 192.168.0.255 is the broadcast address.

In a 192.168.0.0/23, 192.168.0.0 is the network address, and 192.168.1.255 is the broadcast address.... 192.168.1.0 is a usable IP address in that network.

No that’s not how that works. The first address and a subnet is never usable. The last address and a subnet is never usable. There is no in between. Every single subject has exactly one first address and exactly one last address.

That is what he is saying. The network is 192.168.0.0, so 192.168.1.0 is usable.

How are you dealing with machines that people turn off at night?

By having a company policy put in place that they are to be left powered on. Logged off, or locked, yes. But not powered off.

This is my policy. Reboot when you leave. Login when you come back in. Let's just say that only about half of the people do this. For the other half, I have a PDQ deploy schedule for every night at 8 PM, that works with PDQ inventory to reboot client systems that have an uptime of greater than 5 days.
