Varies on the service. But some of them can have engineers or our manufacturing floor at a stand still.

RE: DC Demotion Question
@scottalanmiller I agree that is a superior but i would still have issues with the other services.

RE: DC Demotion Question
Original it was using sonicwalls built in user database, but it was messy. On hire and fires we need to go to multiple systems to enable/disable their access. Users would constantly forget their passwords as they had different account/passwords for each service.
Now.. You need vpn, version control, crm, mrp ect.. Just add the user to the appropriate group. When someone leaves or gets fired now i just need to disable their account and boom we are done.

RE: DC Demotion Question
Good points.
In my environment I use AD for other services like VPN and version control and if AD goes down those services are also effected.
Its a give and take i guess. I could have the services independent of each other but then im stuck managing multiple accounts databases and that is messy at best.

RE: DC Demotion Question
If you are there to restore it.
What happens if you are out to lunch, or vacation? Unfortunately here i'm a one man shop and i need some sort of redundancy.

Bit of a headache, not feeling so productive.
Make sure to take the 50 cent aspirin.

RE: DC Demotion Question
I like to have two in case a service goes down.
For example, i had our primary DNS server service stop responding. While i fixed that the company was still able to operate with the machines going to the secondary server. The end users were not even aware that something went down.
Same if AD ever went down. I guess its a personal preference, if i have the resources i elect to do it.

Oh sweet, ive been looking to get an apple watch. Going to wait it out now.
I have an Apple Watch and I love it. But it is the 32mm version rather than the 42mm and it is pink.
I believe you mean rose gold
I want the 42mm version, the 32mm looks tiny on my wrist.
At first I was against getting a smart watch, but then i stepped back and realized i have no legitimate reason to dislike them.
I'm a fan, I love that it allows me to keep my phone in my pocket but not miss things.
That is a big reason i want it. Often im riding and i feel my phone vibrating, so i have to get off to see if its important.

RE: DC Demotion Question
When i had to do this I run DNS on the new VM's until i am ready to demote and decommission the old machines. I update the DHCP servers dns settings to reflect the new server.
I haven't ran into any issues demoting a server that hasn't failed using dcpromo.

It's pretty standard that leases cost less over the long haul. Unless you drive your car into the ground. Then buying used is cheapest.
280,000 miles in 9 years? Yeah, timing chain finally jumped a sprocket. That was highly upsetting, I liked that car.
We've got a number of printers around here with almost 1,000,000 pages printed. Wish I knew of a decent company that serviced printers around here. (Lots of people operating out of their van and/or basement.)
We have several printer with a million pages printed without any servicing. We just run them until they fail and replace.

RE: Home Lab NAS
I've used the Netgear ReadyNAS from earlier on when they were sparc based. No complaints, they just work and work. I still have one in production where it does not matter if it fails. its going on at least 8 years.
