      What kind of licensing does Microsoft and others offer for people who need to dick around with hypervisors, namely hyper-v and vsphere? Is there a "good" way to do it that is cost effective for a home lab?

      Hyper-V is free, so the licensing would be with the Server OS.

      Which you can download free trials from their website which last for 180 days.

      Oh cool. I'm just going to pay for the OS. From what I'm seeing here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/windows-server-2012-r2-pricing your options are pretty limited if you want to have a lot of different VM's running.

      You don't need to pay a single cent for a fully functioning Hyper-V, just download Microsoft Hyper-V Server (NOT Windows Server with Hyper-V). There are no restrictions or limits in functionality. It's just not allowed to install any roles but Hyper-V and Failover Cluster. Fair enough from my point of view.

      For the guests, well, when it's Windows you need to pay for it, no matter the hypervisor. If you only plan for Linux/BSD VMs for example, you won't need any server licenses or CALs at all.

      X11VNC on the server side will do just fine, on the client side TightVNC and UltraVNC should both do the job. I'm using TightVNCViewer and MobaXTerm Pro for this.

      That's why I asked: You need to decide what you want. VNC for example is "just transporting your framebuffer" via ethernet, simply said. RDP on the other hand will create a dedicated session

      For those Linuex OSes with desktop GUIs (such as Mint) what do you typically use to remotely access them?

      I Googled it and got all sorts of answers. Figured if there was a consensus here at ML that would be the place to start.

      VNC, NX, RDP, X11 forwarding ... options are nearly endless. Do you want to control the same session (like TeamViewer and the likes) or do you want a dedicated session?

      yepp. Got another one removed yesterday, all four answers wrong. Was about what to do when you have a stalling app in Android. At least not an OG question but from a user.

    • RE: MS System Center Licensing

      I'm using SC2012R2, and it's a nightmare at times. All the products are great, that's not the question, but you would normally need a dedicated person to run each of the products. Way too complicated for the average SMB. The current version of SC is no exception, I guess it's great if you are running multiple datacenters and thousands of users across the globe, but SMB will see a lot of overhead, both in complexity and licensing. On top of that, they changed nearly everything you might know from your version.

      Long story short: I'm going to buy 5nine Manager during my next upgrade cycle. Simple, fast, very low cost compared to SC. Sure, they are playing in whole different leagues, but like I said, I don't need all the overhead.

      So maybe that's something for you too? At least download an eval of the current version of VMM before you upgrade your licenses.

      Just got a temp/humidity and door sensors working on a Pi, tomorrow I get to decide how often I want to log temps, what temps to send a text/email to myself, how often to check temp/humidity and all that good stuff that needs dumped into a script.

      FrankenSwitch will get a display tomorrow 😉 Just need to order a longer FPC (flat ribbon) cable

      Nice. More pictures of FrankenSwitch as well I hope!

      Here's my little project. All I really wanted was a temp monitor for one of the rooms. Total out of pocket cost on the hardware for this was like $40. Should I want more of the same sort of thing it'll be easy to copy the code 🙂

      link text

      Also, my little adventure in C coding for the day:

      tech@tempdoor-rpi ~/source $ tmphmd.out
       temperature = 24.0 degC 75.3 degF
          humidity = 41.7%

      Hehe. Despite having a C and even some Assembler background, I really like to use C# today, even on the Pi with mono. Such a great language, very comparable to Java without all the BS.

      Take a look at these sensors I am using: https://www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B00EU71QWK/ref=pd_aw_sim_60_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41E662BaZEL&dpSrc=sims&preST=AC_UL100_SR100%2C100&psc=1&refRID=NPY8AEDW0YKRXAJV86AT

      Dallas 1wire, very cheap, great quality, extremely easy to use.

      Yep, I like 1wire stuff as well. I've just been spoiled by Adafruit having example code for everything they do. Makes getting the little bits working so much quicker and easier. All I really have to do is figure out the custom scripts I want (yes, I'm lazy, lol 😛 )

      BTW, just found the same sensor over at Adafruit. The price is just 5 times higher... Must be the additional 4k7 resistor 😛

      Waterproof DS18B20 Digital temperature sensor + extras
      PRODUCT ID: 381
      $9.95

      No code required, there's a virtual file driver (/sys driver) on Linux available or these. Just a one-liner, can will post that tomorrow if you like.

      I'm on a huge foodie change at the moment.

      The biggest change I've made is, getting up earlier, having a substantial breakfast and I already feel way better have 3 weeks of that, more awake/energetic during the day, more productive.

      I'm the opposite. Breakfast makes me tired all day. And hungry too, so much more hungry when I eat breakfast.

      Breakfast kickstarts metabolism, no matter what it is, so the hunger is natural. Sugary breakfast makes me instantly tired and hungry, but fiber, protein, and carbs will carry me through lunch. Breakfast should be a good 400 calories to really count.

      Someone needs to hack that metabolism-thingy. Or maybe remove it from the repo.

      I'm not yet sure if it will be the official 7" Raspberry Pi display or a 7" from Lemaker and a Banana Pro I have spare. Problem with the Lemaker: no touch controller 😞
