Depends on your requirements. VirtualBox works just fine in most cases and even better than Hyper-V when it comes to things like USB pass-through. Probably because Hyper-V is a type 1 hypervisor while VirtualBox is a type 2. But again: You probably won't notice that in most cases.

Just to spin up VM's for messing about/testing stuff mainly - partly to teach myself more stuff, partly because I get bored easily...So will be wanting to run Linux VMs as well as Microsoft VMs

With VirtualBox, you are able to just pass through a USB thumb drive and you will have full access to it, including things like partition tables. I'm using this whenever I need to do something complex to partitions on disks, sticks and SD cards: Fire up a Linux-VM, attach the storage device, start parted / gparted / fdisk / sfdisk / whatever, modify partitions and finally just detach the device. Works very well.

Oh, BTW: Hyper-V knows how to pass through a local storage device too, but ... well, does not work in each and every case due to some restrictions.

I'm using this for a few dev VMs where I need access to USB smartcard readers or USB webcams for example. Even works with very specialized devices like biometric smartcard readers (the ones from precisebiometrics.com for example)

Just thought about a new project, a DIY kitchen radio. Our beloved 25 years old Siemens radio died a few days ago. It's still working, but some buttons are broken. We already tried 4 or 5 different radios, but all of them aren't good for one reason or another.

So, what makes a good kitchen radio in 2017?

• VHF / UKW (ultra-short range, standard in Europe / Germany) radio
• Play radio streams
• Easy to use timer / alarm
• Would like to stream from Android / iPhone to the radio (we likes to listen to music and audio books when we're preparing the meal for example).
• Display w/Clock
• Low power consumption

It's a shame. ThinkPads used to be better under the IBM brand, but they aren't bad at all today. SuperFish (and other issues)... made them a no-go.

Lack of support and engineering doesn't help, either. They aren't the products that they used to be.
