@scottalanmiller Full DVD means all iso in the ubuntu page?

After a quick glance at the alternate downloads for Ubuntu, it doesn't appear that they have an "Everything DVD" like Debian provides.

Ya you would probably have to make a local repo for everything. Never done it on Ubuntu, but it's relatively easy with RHEL.

That's what I thought too and probably the best possible approach to keep an offline Linux system updated. It's not even specific to Debian or Ubuntu, you can basically do the same with Windows (e.g. WSUS).

      This should get you started:

      http://linoxide.com/ubuntu-how-to/setup-local-repository-ubuntu/

PS: Follow one tutorial and adapt information from the other links later on, if required.

Trying to figured out if there's any chance Installing VirtualBox inside a virtual machine.
      :juggling_tone2:
      https://mangolassi.it/topic/9848/installing-virtualbox-inside-a-virtual-machine

Possible, yes. Good idea, no. Something another VM won't solve I take it?

There should be no issue, but you may not get VT-x inside the guest because VirtualBox can't do V-in-V AFAIK (aka nested virtualization, haven't checked that in a while). The guest OS running the inner VirtualBox basically is not aware of the fact it is running virtual.

Edit-1: Hyper-V can do nested virtualization after a little hack. Can do a quick search for the link if you need that.

      Edit-2:
      https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4032
      https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=63313

At least 32-bit OS'ses should do as guests.

    • RE: Xubuntu 16.10 Issue Detected

A quick Google search for "BCM43142 Ubuntu" suggests that the wifi controller is using a closed source firmware. What needs to be done now is to identify which firmware you need and how you can install it.

      1. According to linuxwireless.com: You'll need the b43 driver, not the b43legacy (which is for BCM 802.11b chipsets only). There's another driver called brcmfmac, which is for Broadcom USB devices only.

      2. Run this command while the machine is somehow connected to the internet:

      sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

Here's a Ubuntu specific wiki with more information:
      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx

There are additional instructions on how to perform the installation in case you don't have direct internet access on the very same page:
      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#STA_-_No_Internet_access

This is expert level stuff. I don't think this is a path for him to be attempting.

Let's say "intermediate". But yes, moving on to a different distro is probably his best bet.

If it doesn't work on Ubuntu, I'd imagine it won't work on anything else. They usually have the best hardware support.

I agree, but in this case it's just a missing wifi firmware which you need to install manually. I bet he can get his wifi working.

The whole problem at this point is that he messed up his system with some ugly vendor provided package. That's why he can't install anything else.

You are mixing things. What THIS discussion about is a Linux newbie who just needs some very basic OS included packages selected (plus maybe Chrome, we aren't sure) that should be from an added repo. There is no reason to be considering building anything or getting individual packages or using commands like DPKG. You are then referencing advanced server configuration stuff for experts that has the sole purpose of building something that is not in the repos for a totally different purpose. The two are not related.

What this and his other threads are about is just getting a laptop up and running so that he can program Java. He was not aware of repos, how Linux works, when packages are appropriate, that software even existed for Linux, etc. We are trying to get him up and running the right way, not trying to confuse him with loads of "well you COULD do it this way." He doesn't need Wine, we are pretty sure he doesn't need Chrome, he doesn't need to download lots of packages, they are all in the OS already.

Doesn't happen often, but I'm with @scottalanmiller here. The other thread was about brand new software that doesn't yet exist in the official (or other) repos. There was another thread like this, about installing Snipe-IT.

Here, we're talking about a newbie trying to get things running... in a 12-gauge shotgun way of approaching things.

PS @Lakshmana: Don't get me wrong, we all want to help you, but you are sometimes trying to get straight through the wall instead of using the door 😉

Did some ugly hacking today. Recompiled some old executable to a shared lib including some exposure of functions. Next, added a function to that lib to allow it to retrieve a delegate (function pointer). Added another function to act as kind of a callback event. Added that lib to a C# project (Mono) via P/Invoke dynamic loading, called that first function within the lib with a pointer to a function in C# and now I can get a callback when the lib is done with processing. Ugly, scary, dirty, but it works.

Now I would love to see someone doing this in Java. JNI? pfffft.

Basically a 3D printed case and (have to guess here, I'm not a USB expert. Just guessing from dwc2 kernel module being used) a USB OTG port including ethernet support to get internet access from the host.

I like the overall result, but it's not exactly black magic.

Yep. I wonder if the standard size USB port is soldered on the board or wired in and attached to the plastic piece?

I'm doing some homeoffice from Wendnesday to Friday at the moment, but I could take a look at a Pi Zero when I'm back in my office next week. I don't think it's possible to solder it to the PCB, so it must be glued to the case somehow.

If the pizza ain't from NY, it won't be as good...our water makes our pizza so amazing...one reason no one else in the country can measure up to true NY pizza.

The real NY style places down here actually import NY water for their dough. My neighbors are from Long Island, they found this out from living here 10+ years.

    • RE: Holiday Discussion: What Was Your Most Fun or Interesting Career Position

Have seen a lot of things so far. Most scary situation:

Many years ago, a few years after 9/11, I had a research project in Ireland about a next-gen regenerative heating system (solar panels, water tanks in the earth, air heat pump, oven with heat recovery cycle and so on). My task was to build the control system (controlling pumps and valves, measuring temperatures etc.) and the remote management part. I think it was short before Christmas.

Anyway. When I tried to head back home from Shannon airport, something very scary happened during check-in: The security lady looked at my baggage, raised her hand and suddenly, two tall officers stood behind me, SMGs raised: "Stop, don't make a single move.", one of the guys whispered. It was exactly like you might think: Like in a bad movie.
A second later, the Lady in front of me said: "Sir, slowly take off your clothes" while putting on latex gloves. I was scared like sh*t and asked: "What the hell... what's wrong?". She slowly took two spare PCBs, which had a battery to power the RTC, and a temperature sensor (with an immersion sleeve) out of my baggage. "Sir, what's that?", she asked. At this point, I was only wearing jeans and t-shirt. I couldn't believe my eyes and started to laugh. One of the officers behind me: "Sir, this isn't funny at all". Yeah, you bet. I explained what they found and offered to give them a demonstration of the device to show them that it's not a bomb trigger.

They later explained that the wiring of compound explosives looks a bit like my temperature sensors. At least I was able to get on board of my plane and get home in time. I think I will never forget that scene.

Get the larger one. Think about wear leveling in hardware (which often does not work or simply does not exist except in high-end products) or in software using specialized filesystems like YAFFS and others.
