Gjacobse's link pointed to Versa Mount adapter. I am looking to see if management is open to an adapter.
      Here's the combo:

If this doesn't work... management has to change the color to something else.
      Thanks guys!

    • I got tasked with an odd objective... getting a white mountable monitor... anyhelp would be awesome

Long story short, I was tasked with getting a monitor for our receptionist. The reception desk is white, so are the walls, and as you may have guessed it... I need to find a white/silver color monitor which is mountable.

The criterias are it needs to be White, versa mountable, DVI or above, and 27" only.

These criterias eliminates 90% of available options. So far I have found some, but they are either discontinued or out of stock.
I am opened to painting... or drilling to install versa mount plate... but management may not like the idea very much.
Here's an example that is out of stock

    • Do you remove native printers/fax when you deploy machines? Win7/Win10

Quick question... is it safe to remove all native printers? Every machine seems to come with Fax and Microsoft XPS Document Writer... Do you bother to remove it?

I just had a user who keep complaining that their print job won't print. They thought the printer is broken, or jammed... so they open the door (the wrong way) and broke the door hinge. It is holding with duct tape now. Upon further investigation, we found that the user sent the print job to Microsoft XPS... and when the pop up windows opens, they just ignore it and close it. smh.

To prevent any more honest stupidity I am thinking of removing Microsoft XPS writer and Fax. Do anyone knows any reason why we should keep it?

Restore windows to 2 weeks ago seem to fix(revert) the problem. I wish there is a proper way to fix this problem. I guess this will do for now.

This solution won't work for those who utilize 😄 as their main drives for programs and such. This is my test bench, so I'm fine with restoring them weeks earlier

    • RE: how your IT department approach a request?

We have default template for each department. If they want something different, they have to specified in details, then we will return with how much more it will cost, and Pros Cons from IT perspective.

Every once in a while we will get a special request like New Machine that that support 3 monitors setup. We will then return with more questions like 'what kind of monitors?' 'do we have these monitors already or do we need to purchase them as well?' 'For what purpose?' We need these information to determine if we need high end graphic card or basic ones will do.

If they failed to provide suffice information, we will give them 2 weeks before dropping the request. Obviously, all communications are through emails. Anything not in email communication means it never happens.

@Breffni-Potter said in GTX1080, 1070, 1060... which would you get for gaming? 2-3 years future proof?:

No such thing as future proofing in an industry which changes every 3 months.

I'm rocking an entry level Nvidia card, was about £80 when I got it.

It runs almost everything really really nicely and it's a 2 year old system.

Get what makes you happy today, don't worry about future games/changes because no one knows what'll happen in 6 months.

That's a cold hard truth, but true. I'll see how much I have in saving, and get the best one I can afford. Maybe I will get Titan X 😛

    • GTX1080, 1070, 1060... which would you get for gaming? 2-3 years future proof?

Obviously, each game has different recommended requirement. Since these graphic cards are just released, would anyone here recommended getting 1080 just for "future proof" for gaming?

What should I take into consideration (beside how broke I will be after buying 1080) before buying a graphic card?
The last time I buy something was 4-5 years ago...so I am pretty far behind on new components.

In the past, I could not afford new components due to my salary, but next week I will pay the last balance on my Credit card, which means money for new rig $$$. So far I only play CS:GO, SC2, and other not heavy graphic oriented games. With new games releasing, I am interested in Battlefield 1 and other games that may required better GPU to maintain 60FPS.

I will be getting CPU, DDR4, M.2 SSD later next year as will.

    • RE: MS OFFICE GPO issue:Outlook (various version) GPO Win7-10 not applying to all machines.

So after multiple tests, reinstall, refresh, and snapshots.... I finally came to a conclusion (disclaimer: this is personal result, and not Microsoft official solution):

The GPO is working as intended, but it was intended for ProPlus (and above). For whatever reason unknown to us, Microsoft made Office 365 Business unable to pickup GPO (seem to be during installation).

Workaround: As stated in previous comment, you will need to install ProPlus (2013/2016 | 32bit/64bit), then sign in with an account with Office 365 Business subscriptions. Because Office detects that the sign in accord do not have ProPlus, you will still get "Activation required". To fix the activation required, hit Update Now, which will downgrade ProPlus to Business. The only differences we noticed is Business do not have Skype for Business, Access, and Publisher. The rest of the application still works, and GPO now work as we expected.

If you already have Office 365 Business installed, it is highly recommended to uninstall > restart first. Otherwise, the solution may not work.

Again, this is Not Microsoft official solution.

Recap: Uninstall O365 Business (if installed) > Restart > Install O365 ProPlus > signin with Business subscription > Update (to trigger downgrade from Pro to Business) > Profit!

    • RE: Former Verizon-Now Frontier Communication....why is the review so bad?

@travisdh1 said in Former Verizon-Now Frontier Communication....why is the review so bad?:

Honestly, you've got the choice of one company (Frontier) that was put together solely for Verison to dump their unwanted and un-cared for infrastructure on (they didn't start that way, it's just what it's become), and a lazy, complacent company that just doesn't care in Time Warner. Neither of them are something I'd be happy with, they're just what you're stuck with. Probably not worth the time and hassle to switch, unless they completely screw up.

True... Time to move to Austin for Google Fiber. 😄

    • Former Verizon-Now Frontier Communication....why is the review so bad?

I saw another thread about changing ISP (FL), so I decide to look up how my ISP is doing... apparently they deserved -1 star if it exists.

Personally, I do not have any problem with them. The transaction was smooth with (expected) 4 hours downtime during the switch, but that was it. I have been using Verizon Fios (internet only) for the past couple of years, and their customer services are sloppy at best. Their supreme "Quantum Gateway" sucks real bad. I am still using Actiontec MI424WR daisy chained with ASUS RT-AC3200 with little to no problem for the past years.

However, Frontier receive 1star or less on most review website. Why is that? Can anyone shine some light? I have not encounter any problem that required me to call their support yet... Although I can related to some review that their reps failed to impress me as knowledged or well-trained.

Unfortunately, my address only support Frontier (Verizon) or Time Warner.... so I choose Verizon..this is before the switch. After reading some reviews I am now uncertain if I should remain with Frontier or make the switch.

      @zuphzuph

I found a bypass to this issue. Again... not sure where I read it from (open around 50+ tabs). Someone mentioned that if I

install Proplus ClicktoRun > signin using Business subscription account > Push office to Update (downgrade from Proplus to Business) > While keep Regedit intact (I have not compare regedit yet).

This does appears to fix the problem, and it is now be able to pick up Safe Sender list pushed through GPO (after GPUPDATE). Going to run some more experiments.
I will post GPResult when I got a chance to touch those machines.

is there any pattern between the ones working and not working? Office version, OU placement, SG membership, etc?

      The program varies...
GPO applied to top User OU.
As for applications...I do not see any pattern. According to an article (that I could not find now) stated that ClicktoRun for O365 Business do not support GPO. However, I found one user with O365 Business that has Safe Sender list updated. At the same time I have couple users running H&B2013.msi and failed to get Safe Sender List updated. Plus, There are two ProPlus2013 that still getting Banner, while three other Proplus2013 do not have the same banner. All five machines were identical from processors to application installed date.

    • MS OFFICE GPO issue:Outlook (various version) GPO Win7-10 not applying to all machines.

      Hello all,

I haven't visit Mangolassi for months... Good to be back 😄

We are having issue with Outlook GPO where it will implement to some, but not all, and not all the time.... This drives me nuts as there is no errors...it just decide to not do it.

We have vaiours version of Outlook (Home&Business 2013, Office365 Business 2013/2016, Office365 Proplus 2013/2016), and we have implement Office GPO for these applications. The problem we are facing now is some Office does not pick up the GPO, while the others do. We are certain that the GPO is working since other policies are being applied (only Office is not).

For example: User 1 and User 2 both use the same Office (O365 Business 2013). Both of the get the "upgrade to 2016" banner. We pushed out GPO and one of them no longer see the banner, while the other still see the banner. At the same time...we push Junk Safe Sender list and User 2 get the update on Outlook, but not User 1.

I have personally look at about 10 Outlook with various version... I could not found any pattern at all. 1 H&B2013 get the Safe Sender updated, while the other H&B2013 does not. Same with O365 Business.

I am still on hold with Office support (Microsoft) as I am typing this post. I might get an answer soon...
Has anyone seen these kind of problem before? How to resolve it?

EDIT: FIX: Uninstall O365 Business (if installed) > Restart > Install O365 ProPlus > signin with Business subscription > Update (to trigger downgrade from Pro to Business) > Profit!

    • RE: New IT manager making changes... should I be concern?

@scottalanmiller said in New IT manager making changes... should I be concern?:

Also, look at the change of environment not as an affront to you, that's certainly not what it is. (Well, 99% certain.) This is either someone who is looking to change things because he thinks that they will be better or someone who is looking to do something to their own advantage. But it is pretty much definitely not about you. So don't let any of it feel personal.

If it helps, think about all of the ways that this change will be beneficial to you. You will get to learn new technologies, work with new products and vendors, grow your resume, talk about the migration, etc. What's good for the company and what is good for you are rarely tied together. Get excited, just a bit. Definitely do your best to determine and promote good ideas. But don't despair if the new manager and management don't listen or agree - fight for what you feel is right despite the fact that it is not in your interest. If you convince them to do whatever is right (we don't know what that is yet) then be happy with doing a great job. If you can't convince them then be happy in knowing that you will grow in your career options.

I guessed I took things too personal. I did try my best to keep the infrastructure afloat for so long. Duct tape this, patch that, replace loose screws...I guess sometime an overhaul is needed. Just have to make sure that we are getting something that benefit everyone. Still going to try to present my stand point (with numbers) to the manager first.

@dafyre said in New IT manager making changes... should I be concern?:

@stess : Have you sat down and spoken with the new manager about your concerns?

Sit down with him and find out why he wants to just switch to VMware and show him how well your infrastructure has been built and how much money you are saving the company by sticking with Hyper-V.

I'd at least do this before going over his head. If he refuses to listen, then it may be time to get the folks higher up in the food chain involved.

I did have a quick talk. I did not go in deep because at the time I did not have any value data to back me up. I will hear what he has to offer/propose and see if there is any area I can step in and reduce the cost. Definitely I am against paying labor to service provider/contractor, unless the changes involve more than hardware/software infrastructure like building moves or office moves. Where do you draw the line when service provider should step in for assistant/consultant?
