went down to some local beaches yesterday, had not been down there for almost 6 months.

Want to see climate change, come to the beach with me. tide now comes into the dunes, nowhere to sit any longer. if things don't change within 5 years, which they won't, we're all stuffed.

oh and happy monday morning! 🙂

@obsolesce said in Is it authentication?? Slow response.:

@siringo watch resource monitor, resmon.exe, when during the delay of opening an app seemingly caused solely by connecting to the wifi network.

For paint.exe to open instantly prior to wifi connection, then slowly after, and instantly off wifi... seems like you'll notice something in resmon somewhere. Maybe A/V or something. Look at everything even the network and possible new tcp connections when you open paint.

I've got some time to look at this today, thanks.

My laptop, isn't joined to any of the domains.

Pretty sure it can't be a domain related thing then.

Is the laptop part of Azure AD? - have you installed any O365 apps, like Teams and logged in using an Azure AD account? If so, by default Azure does try to take over the PC. Could be related this that....

This is what I've been thinking for a while.

The PC is not part of any Azure directory, but I do run O365 apps licensed to the people I support, but log into those apps using my own O365 account.

I think this is where the problem may lie.

This is what I've thought for quite a while to be causing the problem.

But, yesterday I was trying to update the zerotier client. The update wouldn't complete saying I didn't have sufficient access to start the service.

I disconnected from WiFi and the update completed successfully.

I think I need to sort this O365 mess out and go from there.

      Thanks for the help.

    • Is it authentication?? Slow response.

I work at 8 different sites.
All sites are Windows based domains.
My laptop, isn't joined to any of the domains.
I connect to the local network via a WiFi network and get IP details from Windows servers.

When I connect to the sites WiFi, I've noticed at some sites it can take 20-60 seconds for locally installed apps to launch on my laptop, EG Firefox, Paint, Notepad, nothing special.

If I disconnect from the WiFi, these apps launch as quickly as you'd expect them to.

Reconnect and they take 20-60 secs to launch once more.

As everything relies on DNS in the Windows world, I checked DNS on the network,. and it all looks OK. There are no obvious errors in Event Viewer on my laptop or on any servers.

I thought maybe it's some type of authentication issue, wondering maybe the request to launch the app goes off to see if I have sufficient permissions to access the app and maybe the delay is caused because I don't have authentication onto/into the Windows domain? So I mapped a drive to a network share using my domain creds. This made no difference.

      It's reproduceable.

I'm at a loss where to look next.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?

Also @siringo, why can't they remove the A/V themselves when their contract starts?
IMO, It's your ass on the line before their start date and they are just trying to make things easier for themselves at the expense of your soon-to-be former client.

That's exactly how I see it. I'm not going to help them at all.

They seem to be a bunch of cowboys. To be honest I can't see the boss being happy with them at all, they're too informal & just don't understand.

The client was a specialist medical practise. These people tell their clients they're going to die. I can't see how people like that will be able to tolerate IT people that are proud to call themselves 'nerds' & 'geeks' and have pictures on their web site of themselves, posing with stuffed toys & giggling.

They're more like gamers than IT professionals.

they asked for a rate sheet incase they need me to come in and help with something.
i'm loathed to help at all following the way i've been treated.
if i do help, the rate will be astronomical.

      there's no respect
i'm an older worker now and people think you don't know anything because you don't know about the latest xyz.
truth be told, I don't know about the latest xyz because i've seen that type of thing before and it had limited market appeal and folded after 5 years

getting from 25 yo to 50 yo doesn't take long, you should always have your ears open ready to learn and always treat people respectfully.

lost a client. been with them for 8-9 years.
      no consultation, no nothing.
they have a track record of this type of behaviour
the worst thing about it all
      the way i've been treated
got told my services were no longer required by a consultant

the new mob they've gone with
first thing they asked me to do (yeah, I'm going to take notice of what they want)
can I remove the av off all hosts so their rmm can be installed
this, while i'm still managing the network

@jaredbusch would you have like to have been selected?

I was requested to attend for jury service once when younger. Turned up with long hair and a Jimmi Hendrix shoulder bag. Didn't get selected, wonder why?

About 4 years ago I was called to jury duty, complete with long hair and a very long goatee. I got picked because the case involved theft by computer. When they asked what I did for work I saw both attorneys making check marks. I was chosen, so was another guy who was a developer.

haha, IT nerds. I've been requested a few times since then, but I always knock it back. Being self employed allows me to get out of it.

I live 65kms from the nearest court house and they can only request you up to 60 kms.
