I leave work to be by myself during lunch, even if I only drink a bottle of Soylent. Removing myself for some alone time really helps me out.

It's incredibly important that I get my arse out of the building for an hour as well

Exactly. No matter what, I'm gonna go away from my desk for an hour every day. Even if I just sit in my car and nap, I get out for a while every day. No exceptions.

@RojoLoco maybe, but ML is a bit more unique IMHO compared to the average forum.

Absolutely. I was just saying I'm glad that when we expose poor service publicly, many companies will then deal with the issue (vs phone / chat support where they run you around in circles and don't fix the issue).

@dafyre money. The answer is always money. Shouldn't be that hard to sell a list of personal info to a cybercrook.

I see Lenovo adds ALL over the place on spiceworks. No idea why.

      Just me?

If you install uBlock Origin, ads will all go away. If you still see ads, just right-click and choose "block element", and that ad will go away as well.

The answer to your question, however, is MONEY. Money is why you still see Lenovo ads on SW. They will advertise anything they get paid to advertise.

I did have adblock plus installed in Edge... "did"... I have no idea what happened to it! I did not uninstall it, and I don't see it in the menu anymore.

      ...nice one Microsoft!

Adblock plus lost my support when they started taking money from advertisers to classify some ads as "acceptable"... to me, there is no such thing as an acceptable ad. But, ABP remains the only blocker for IE, and presumably for Edge. My recommendation is to use something like Opera (or chrome, or firefox, etc.) with uBlock installed.

I am now the hero here..... boss comes over and says "we have a problem - we need the data off this old external USB drive but it's not detected in windows" I say "let me see...." it's an ancient Maxtor giant enclosure with a 3.5" IDE drive inside (yep). I un-carefully pry the case apart (broke the shit out of it), and then they say "we need this data NOW, tonight". Ok brain, time to do your thing... thinking... thinking..... EUREKA!!!! Our old crappy training PCs still have IDE optical drives! Great success!!! But then the newer USB drive the owner has for the transfer is USB 3.0..... so it was acting stupid. I said, in my best Nick Burns voice "MOVE!!!" I made a folder on the owner's desktop and quickly transferred the whopping 1.3 GB of data.... all files moved successfully, both bosses happy and smiling, my stock just shot up a few points, and it's almost time to go home. So.....

@art_of_shred said in Would You Hire Someone in IT Who Does Not Have a Home Lab:

It's kinda simple. You're building a team. Do you pick people looking for a paycheck, or people with a passion about what you're doing? If you have the option, you're looking for passion... or you shouldn't be the one doing the hiring.

once again passion shouldn't be determined on if they do stuff outside of working hours. I work to get a paycheck yes, but I also show passion for my job while doing so.

Not good enough when there is a huge line of people behind you who show not only passion while at work, but also while at home. You're hamstringing yourself and saying it's not fair that they choose to be passionate always, and you only some of the time.

it's your choice - it's not a wrong choice, it's simply a choice.. and as such, your life will go different directions.

Bring this to Scott's constant talks about college. The person who goes into hotel staff our of HS, versus the one who goes to college. The non college guy will be light years ahead learning wise in the real world.

Sadly, so many uppers today will hold the non college people down because they (the uppers) think that college is some kind of right of passage - but that's becoming less and less the case these days.

So the people like me (that have hobbies in something other than what I do for a living) get screwed because they aren't willing to put time in after work to learn more things?

I have been successful in my life thus far, and not having a home lab hasn't held me back (that I am aware of). I learn what I need to for the job I am doing right now. If a new job requires me to learn new things, then I will. I am just not willing to sacrifice the few hours I have at home with my family to dedicate to a job. I already spend 50+ hours a week doing IT related things at work, the last thing I want to do is go home and do more of that. I guess I am just different and like my time outside of the IT world.

Amen. I can't believe this view is unacceptable to the NTG minions (not just the employees). Life is for living, and much of that (for me anyway) occurs NOT in front of a screen. I used to do the whole "eat, drink, live, breathe, shit IT stuff 24/7" thing when I was younger, but eventually doing IT for 40-60 hours a week becomes enough. I've never had a job where I didn't have the luxury of on the clock learning time (of which I have taken great advantage), so maybe my view is fuct, but at 42, I have other (better) shit to do after I clock out.

What the hell is wrong with these people....

At so many businesses, the one arsehole who had the gumption to change a toner cartridge gets to be the de facto server admin. It's the equivalent of saying "I put some washer fluid in my car, now I'm a certified expert auto mechanic!!!"

even making a pipe bomb isn't illegal.

Making it might not be, but possession of it may be depending on the jurisdiction.

True, but intent needs to be considered.

I might legitimately need a pipe bomb to break apart some concrete at my house.

That's not how that works. It depends on jurisdiction but possession of an improvised explosive device is illegal in most states.

What makes something improvised rather than carefully planned?

If these guys are holding it, it's likely improvised...

I was it the park playing kickball last night and groups of kids (kids like 18-21 years old) would walk right through the field. Pretty rude, but you gotta admit it's pretty adorable too, everyone standing in a little circle pointing their phones at the ground chasing cartoons.

Nope, just rude. A firm kickball upside the head would have quickly dispersed those arseholes.
