You heard it first here, calling bullshit.

Consumerist articles tend to be on the rather self serving side. Beside the fact that Comcast couldn't give two shits about someone, let alone enough to actively seek out folks and find out where they work. As was stated in the article, why would Comcast single out this individual when they get calls every single day of "I'm a lawyer at a big firm" or "I'm the CEO of important company".

      Smells like bullshit to me.

Upstate NY has the only LATA in America that was not a part of AT&T and as such is not regulated like the rest of the country and does not have the price and quality protections that the rest of the US enjoys.

How many times I gotta say this, completely wrong.

Beside the obvious old GTE system, there is SNET which is related to Bell and Cincinnati Bell which only had the name. Then there is tons of smaller telephone cooperatives in many different states like CoServ here in Texas within the LATA of the old Bell system.

IntraLATA is regulated at the state level. To believe that somehow they are allowed to charge 1000x more than the rest of the state and jack with lines because of "reasons" is patently ridiculous. Frontier is crazy, but they ain't that insane.

Also, Rochester is 974 LATA, covers mostly Frontier with a small smattering of Windstream and local co-ops. 585 is the area code for Rochester/Buffalo, completely different thing. Buffalo is 140 LATA, with Verizon providing the majority of POTS.

The storage requirement is no joke! I'm currently sitting somewhere around 100 GB. You'll want to make sure you run the cleanup wizard on it monthly or more. The longer you wait to run it, the more it freezes your server and seems to be hung.

Yes to this and Jared's points. Run the cleanup wizard regularly. Not to worry though, you can script this with PowerShell of course.

Also only download updates for products actually in your environment. It will save a ton space if you do that.

That reminds me of an escalation I had from a person from a certain subcontinent.

Hits me up saying that he cannot complete a change, getting an error on install. So read over the notes but since I'm still shaking out my permissions to the environment I asked him to send me a screenshot of the error. He sends me the one for "This update does not apply to this version of Windows" error. He was attempting to install the IA64 version of a Server 2008 R2 patch on an x64 2008 Gold box.

Mind you, this change was supposed to take an hour. He was already on hour three at that point.

this lack of sleep is really getting to me.

I literally didn't wake up for something like 11 hours (that I remember) on Monday. 1AM-12:30PM. That was a nice little heart attack to wake up to.

      Pussy.

I woke up 10:00AM Friday and didn't go to sleep until 10:00PM Saturday. For a site we had to perform a storage migration on 2000+ VMs on 20 clusters where our part of the work took three hours. We sat around just waiting for applications to come back online. At least I wasn't involved with last weekend's work. My colleague worked from noon Friday until noon Monday then put in another batch of 15 hour days until Friday.

And dude, get your a**{moderated} to work. On time, every time, all the time. Nothing gets someone bounced faster than showing up late. I can get away with coming in late because I've worked there for a good amount of time and I'm in the golden boy category.

An ATA is an FXS device. You need FXO to do POTS to FreePBX

I have absolutely no idea what that means, but I just want to say it's a fantastic IT acronym sentence!

FXS means station, think actual phone to pick up. FXO means office, as in Central Office, which connects to an incoming POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) line.

You need something to take an incoming line and turn it into a SIP trunk for FreePBX to run against.

      http://www.multitech.com/brands/multivoip#gsc.tab=0

That's assuming that's a straight up single POTS line. If they already have a system in place, e.g. key system or ISDN PRI, then processes change. A key system is an old school method of creating a PBX without all the fun of PBX systems. Soft PBXes emulate key systems well, but have a bit of a challenge with routing and such. Using a PRI means they have a full blown PBX, and wouldn't quickly translate over to using any soft PBX out there.

What do they got, and what do they need. Churches are notoriously bad at explaining that.

Seriously, this. I cannot believe you even THOUGHT to say they would never see this. Social media searching is very common practice now for corporations large enough to have a dedicated HR department.

Why do you think I keep my employer a vague secret, not to mention my real name?

The first word of anything in life is keep your fucking mouth shut. Get arrested, lawyer up and shut your mouth. Get a new job, stroll in, keep your mouth shut until you learn the lay of the land. Join a forum, lurk and watch before spewing forth. Go into a bar, sit down and order a beer and people watch for a bit.

Oh, and a certain conference that is coming up? A certain someone shouldn't be going because he will be balls deep in training.

Yes, you can modify stuff via GPO, but it's not as simple or as likely as them going in there and modifying the file themselves. And considering it was # out and not deleted wholesale, that says to me someone went in there and did it manually.

So here is the RAID 5 question.... Are you saying that I'm wrong and that you've been screwing people over by holding back info that we don't have? Or that I'm right and that you call it narcissistic to be right and stick to your guns while people who know they are wrong try to brow beat others into accepted the wrong things that they say?

No, it's because you have become a serious [moderated] about it. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. Like "Not letting people get away with being idiots isn't the same as needing to be right", but it's actually both. You have to be right, come hell or high water, and you have to stop people from being idiots in your perception. So your line about conceding the argument? Once again, you can claim you are right, bask in that righteousness, and feel better about it. This is exhibited in other topics as well.

You can be wrong, dead wrong. And it's not possible to shape the world the way you want it. If people want to use RAID5, like we do on thousands of servers and SANs, let them. If they want to buy a SAN, let them. Don't expect everyone to bend to your will at any time just because you said so, using whatever "facts" you bring forth. Because some of it is fact, some of it is "fact". You are not that convincing.

This goes beyond "bossy" or "confident". It's drifting into the "I'm right, I'm always right, because I know everything about everything and you are always wrong" mentality that Scott exhibits at times. RAID5 anyone?

Maybe we are doing what we want to be doing. Maybe everybody is different? Maybe the reason you're so up in arms about this is because you dont like what you're doing.

Again, it's a means to an end. I really don't care what I'm doing or whom I'm working for. It's a job. Is it what I want to get paid to do? No. I want to get paid to sit on the couch, smoke pot and play Xbox all day. Shunyata.

And once again, this narcissism permeates into everything. "i'm still looking for someone who will maintain the quality of service I provide" Really? Have you even tried? Have you found nothing but morons who can't hold a mouse? Are you really so much better than anyone else that if you let someone into your circle who doesn't meet your warped sense of capability you would lose all your customers? It doesn't matter if you have enough business or not. If you are small enough not to require a second person, you don't have enough customers to justify 24x7x365 coverage. And odds are, you are most likely not charging enough to justify this service level. So when you finally keel over and die, they will come into a rude awakening when they find out that everyone else charges twice as much for the level of support they are expecting.

I see this within our organization as well. People wrapping their arms around their specific client, not allowing anyone to perform really any substantial work because they want to control it. They are afraid that if any of our goons start working, they might do a better job than them.and they will be out of a job. This mentality is dangerous and self destructive, both from a business perspective and a mental health perspective. Hoarding isn't considered good, but look at what you are doing. You horde work hours.

Everyone is different, but this work non-stop even while on vacation is not normal. Don't act like it is.

If you are a one man shop and cannot take vacation, why not hire a goon? Or are your customers so pissy that if you dare take off a day they will up and quit using your services? I know doctors who are able to take months off at a time, and they deal in life and death. If a customer requires so much babysitting that you can never leave, that's not a good customer, that's an abusive relationship. "Oh, he didn't mean to yell at me for something he screwed up, it's my fault for not explaining it better". Sound familiar?

I'm sick of this mentality. And I'm gonna call it out like I always do. Complete and utter bull[moderated]. Scott may know some things, but he is dead wrong here. And any employer who demands that you always be available will only find the desperate and insane. We have interests, enjoyment, lives outside of what we do. I do not define myself by my job title. A job is a means to an end, the easiest way to make the most money for the least amount of effort. Someday perhaps I will reach a point where I do what I want and get paid for it, but today is not that day. And until that day comes, I will take off as much time as I please and tell my employer to kiss my [moderated] if they dare call me when I'm having relations with a lady friend.
