In the US the telco providers are nearly always favoured. There is very little consumer protection.

Yep, considering utility providers have to pay the government localities fees in order to basically be a legalized monopoly in the US - They are usually favored. I've heard some areas of Texas are now doing it deregulated meaning any service provider can serve anywhere the chose instead of just when they win the bid with the locality like everywhere else. But they put laws in place to stop that from happening further...

While this is true, I do agree with one thing posted about this. It should never have gotten that far anyway. All of the interactions prior to that are really, really, really bad.

@JaredBusch agreed - they shouldn't have screwed the pooch that badly. As some have pointed out in the reddit thread on it, even if he did threaten to sic his company on them, their giving out customer data is a violation of privacy laws.

But do privacy laws protect what you say in a call (that may be monitored or recorded)? I don't think so.

You heard it first here, calling bullshit.
Consumerist articles tend to be on the rather self serving side. Beside the fact that Comcast couldn't give two shits about someone, let alone enough to actively seek out folks and find out where they work. As was stated in the article, why would Comcast single out this individual when they get calls every single day of "I'm a lawyer at a big firm" or "I'm the CEO of important company".
Smells like bullshit to me.
