But I have had so many issues with redirecting AppData, and various forums also say that's not a good thing to do because of weird issues that can occur with bringing over AppData to a new PC.

I chose to leave AppData alone. I had a bad experience bringing over some info from AppData when it caused a few issues. I ended up creating a new profile and starting over with those couple users.

Some users will use a Firefox or Google account to store their bookmarks. For others who don't want to or don't care, I have them export their bookmarks to their redirected My Documents folder on occasion or during a pc refresh. It has worked for a long time with no major issues.

I don't have half as many users as you do though.

Yeah third party software works. I used to use PowerBrokers Identity Services from BeyondTrust... that worked great...

But, it's third party non-open source software.

Now I simply use realmd and winbind:
      https://www.timothygruber.com/linux/samba-file-server-with-microsoft-ad/#Install_Packages

Were you able to get nested groups from AD to work properly on the Samba shares without PowerBroker's software?

Side-note - I never did get a chance to play with that. To much upgrading over the last few months.

Yes nested groups work in Samba.

What does it show if you enter the command: id [email protected]?

Booted up the server yesterday and it only has ubuntu 16.04.
id [email protected] - no such user

I am going to use your notes and build a new server with Fedora and see if I have any sticking points.

Ultimate goal - We use a linux fax server that puts pdf's into each users folder on the share based on the phone number. I am trying to figure out how lock down each users folder using RBAC with nested groups from AD. If that's possible at all.

Trying to move away from Windows in the future. Don't know how successful I will be.

@scottalanmiller said in How Can the FTE Model Compete with the MSP Model?:

I think the most important thing for people to understand here is that we are talking about a model of engagement, not different people.

Doesn't the model of MSP vs FTE imply a Many vs One scenario? This is where I am getting a little confused when trying to do the comparisons.

If the MSP is a singular person, then there are no pooled resources that belong to the individual MSP that the FTE doesn't have. I am unable to see the difference in the two other than the letters.

Better models mean better results, better careers, better salaries for everyone.

      This is always good.

I'm glad I'm not in that boat again haha. I create the reports and it doesn't cost 1000.00. Thank God. SaaS web service I use is Quickbase.com.

Totally depends on the EHR. All the big boys charge out the whazoo for pretty much everything if they even decide its worth their time to do it.

Now - can the DB be made to give the exact thing she wants? possibly, for $1000's for custom reports

This is why I FU%*&#^ EHR/EMR companies. Plus they cannot even get on board with Stage 2 and Stage 3 requirements. Don't get me started on the price of interfaces. Apologize for the off-topic comment but just had to get it off my chest.

@nerdydad said in Considering the Issues of Remote IT vs Local On Premises IT:

We are 130 and don't have a FTE bench person. That is one of the part time hats that we wear along with the other IT duties that we have. I know that bench technically isn't IT, but we do have to fill those duties.

But do you need to fill them? How much does it cost to have expensive IT resources doing non-IT tasks that would be really cheap to have someone doing?

In many cases, the cost is less than the value received for IT personnel to perform many bench tasks, especially in SMB. As the axiom goes, "Cost is what you pay, Value is what you get!"

An onsite FTE in a SMB may provide better value than in an a larger enterprise.

"Reducing or eliminating commute time makes for far better work conditions for both parties. And can be a huge cost benefit to the employee."

I like your possible idea above about maybe a split remote access/onsite FTE for lower salary. Costs would be lower and provide a higher value to both the SMB and the employee.

      We have HP here.

Over the years, the printer drivers have become worse especially when trying to print an envelope. Plus, they keep adding more plastic parts so more they tend to break faster.

I was thinking about switching to something else this next go around.

Hopefully (for me) they are using all their energy on their new copier line!

I'm just rooting for something that doesn't get paper jams once a week (that is after a cleaning and maintenance kit) with a decent printer driver and envelope printer.

Konica Copier/MFP has been great - not 100% jamless, but very infrequent. The same goes for our Lanier/Ricoh desktop MFPs.

I will look into those. Some of our printers are long in the tooth and definitely need replacing.

We own all of our printers/MFPs. We are going to be able to replace them all with new gear (on lease) for less than what we pay today in managed print services/toner... current monthly bill is around $750, current bid from Kyocera is $575 for 1 Large MFP, and 7 desktop MFPs.

Is the $575 per month? Do they supply anything like toner?

So, as it stands the title changes has to go through the C** Level and Exec. VP, is it worth the fight, or is it petty.

As others have mentioned, if it will affect your pay, then it is definitely worth the fight. I have not seen many companies throw more pay at somebody with a perceived "less than" title just because they like them.

I have always believed, being in an SMB, if one is in charge of all, along with managing 1-5 underlings, then they deserve the title of "Technology Director" or "Director of Technical Services."

That title covers management, bench tech, developer, DB admin and many other titles throw about.

      Ubuntu 16.04

In the process of getting rid of my 8 year old ReadyNAS with its NFS share .

I need to copy (a complete duplicate would be nice) the data from the NFS share to local storage. Having limited Linux knowledge, I don't know if using rsync or cp is a better option?

I can script either one but would "rsync -av src dst" or "cp -pRu src dst" be best?

I would also like to have this copy only new files after the original copy is done because I will have both of them going until I my maintenance window on Sat. Then I will be able to change the app currently pointing to the NFS share.

I don't think it will be to bad. It's not like they will be going out of business any time soon. Their products rock and they keep gaining market share.

I don't believe this SEC investigation will change how they go about selling their products.
