@dbeato said in Ransomware Isn't the Problem, IT Departments Are:
@scottalanmiller So are they saying that the security issues that happen because a user click on stuff (which is not always the case), that the IT Department is at fault?
But if IT was done correctly, a user who installs ransomware on their own PC from clicking on something or following through on a bad email, would be an isolated incident, only effecting that one user's device. It shouldn't be possible to spread further than that.

@pete-s yeah it's been a thing now for like 2 years now. Many have been using it and following it.
Yeah, looks like I missed out.
I remember it was something that had to be installed, rather than being a part of the default Windows install. Is that still true?
It's true for Win10. I've been installing it from the built-in MS Store without any issue.
Simply search for
terminal
then click to install one ofWindows Terminal
orWindows Terminal Preview

WHY, when I have a nice new wsus server, complete with all the required updates, ready to go, do clients look at that server and say, nope nothing there for me, but when I tell the client to go look at the MS update server, they say, Oh, here's all the stuff I need.
And why, when I tell the same clients to auto download, they just sit there and say, Hey, i'm ready to download, when do you want me to do that???
Wsus still found in the wild?

While I agree with him, why is this "news"? I have a coworker that believes the vaccine is something nefarious, but ignores the billions of people who have/are getting vaccinated as proof and only takes these random articles as proof that something is amiss.
Are you referring to the abundance of issues so much that the CDC is investigating it?
https://www.today.com/today/amp/tdna219593
Imagine what they are not saying about it.
I seen that the risk of having vaccine related issues is far greater than having covid related issues, for young people.

Simple stuff, looking for basically remote hands to help at a veterinary clinic that is being built. So plugging in new computers and phones, mostly.
I can be if you provide travel, lodging, dining, and a few $k

You sit in these things for hours a day, you want something high quality.
This. I went through some serious back issues last year and got a good chair by order of the doctor.
You want lumbar support for sure, and a chair with all the proper adjustments all around.
There's videos on YouTube for properly adjusting your office chair so I won't get into that.
Also, ideally, a sit/stand desk because getting up frequently or at minimum changing your sitting position is important.
These things helped heal my back so I know it works. It's also the way to go to prevent back injury or issues later due to improper office ergonomics.

You don't need a 3070 to run with max settings.

It seems to be harder to get modding tools running than it is to get the game itself...
I like wemod. I don't think it will work for Linux though, not natively anyways. I game on Windows though so everything just works without needing to mess with anything ever.

@obsolesce That does sound like a really nice update, I'll have to download it and attempt to check it out later. Although, I'm pretty sure my GTX 970 is going to scream at me - it already struggles at times with the current version, and I imagine it will only be worse with the new visual features they added. Might be time for me to seriously consider buying a pre-built so that I can get something like an RTX 3070 so that I can actually run smoothly with these new features...
FWIW, it runs flawlessly on max graphics settings with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q.

Faced with an working IT environment in chaos (undocumented, unpatched, where's the backups, what licenses are there, what warranties, vendors, what servers are in use, what apps etc, etc).
What steps would you take to get things in order as quickly as possible?
And in what order would you do it?
What are they willing to pay you to do? What's your contract say?

No Man's Sky Prisms Update
Update 3.5, Prisms, dramatically refreshes the No Manβs Sky experience with a range of new visual features and technologies. The universe has never looked better, with reflections, new texture effects, more biome detail, improved lighting, new skies, new warp effects, creature fur, and a host more besides.
Awesome update!

Someone has got a high electric bill:
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/15096237/cops-find-bitcoin-mine/COPS were stunned to find a Bitcoin "mine" stealing thousands of pounds of electricity during a suspected warehouse drug raid.
Officers in the West Midlands thought they were about to bust a cannabis farm - but were met with the advanced tech scam instead.
I've seen professional mining rigs that look just like that in datacenters, legal though. I wonder if that is a homebuilt case that is common or if someone makes them like that.
It's a completely different form-factor compared to a standard 19" server, or a 19" server made specifically for GPU workloads like machine learning or even a gaming PC.
They are made like that.

RE: Telescope recommendations?
@brianlittlejohn said in Telescope recommendations?:
@obsolesce the best telescope is the one that you will use. The biggest urge you need to fight is buying a larger scope as your first. What you want to do is get one that is a small light and you can setup fast.
One that is good for seeing and good pictures are kinda opposite ends of the spectrum. I do astrophotography as a hobby. (https://instagram.com/westtexasastro) I started off doing visual, the scope I started with is an Orion StarSeeker IV 127mm. It came with a motorized mount that points the telescope, once you set it up a couple times you can do it and align it in 5ish minutes. It is good for looking at the moon and planets, but you can see some of the brighter nebulas like The Orion Nebula. Iβve also hooked my DSLR to the back of it with a T adapter, but you could also get a mount to hold your smart phone over the eye piece to take pictures with as well.
Thanks for the info. Nice pictures by the way! What's your setup for producing that kind of work? I'm interested, although I am not looking to do that now, but very curious.
I'm not looking to take thousands of pictures and layering them with software, just some simple ones via smartphone for the kids or easier viewing. By viewing well enough, I mean I'd like the kids to be able to distinguish what they are looking at from something else in the sky. For example, if I point it at Saturn, I want them to realize it's Saturn because it resembles Saturn, and not just because I tell them it is Saturn.
I was looking at this one: https://optcorp.com/products/celestron-nexstar-6se
It seems to be a good balance of everything I was thinking about, along with ease of use... and seems portable enough to get in the SUV and take into the desert during interesting events. What do you think of that one? Would there be a better option? Not too pricey, maybe around the 6se or less.

Telescope recommendations?
I'm looking to buy a decent catadioptric telescope for the family. The aim is to see things well enough and get some good pictures. Also not crazy expensive or really big, so catadioptric seems to be the best bet, best of reflective and refractive telescopes. So that's the type I want.
My only question here is if there are any that you can recommend. Yes I can browse Amazon just fine myself but I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who has or came across any that you would recommend as a good buy and experience?

I see few issues above.
- LVM is not a filesystem.
- You don't need to shutdown VM to extend its disk size.
- You don't need to boot from any installer CD to resize partitions, you can do it from within live system with fdisk, although if you have some unusual partition layout you're probably better off doing it offline.
- You can also extend filesystem on a live system, no need for shutdown.
I thought his approach was over cautious. Windows will allow you to extend any partition except the
drive live, and I'm guessing you can likely extend even / live in Linux OSes.
Are you sure about extending c:? I've done it many times, on live systems. Although it was on bare metal desktops after cloning drive to a bigger one.
You did it live with windows tools? OK that would be a new one on me.
Also did it live on Linux as well in both cases.

I've done it lots of times on C for physical and virtual using built in tools. That's not a new one.
