Just had to explain to folks that a problem with software on a user's personal computer on their home network is beyond the scope of our support.

You could always tell them you'll do an in-home diags/repair for $150/hr

2 hour minimum, plus a trip charge.

And paid meal if it's between 5-9pm

At least one country is doing the right thing. Mining crypto is just a waste of energy.

It sounds more like an excuse, to ban crypto to force everyone to use their government's currency, blaming it on electricity waste.

      This will not go well.

      @openit

Definitely 2016. No reason to do 2012 when everything is covered in 2016, plus new features and such that isn't in 2012.

While I'm against the insane amount of energy needed for crypto's creation/use,

Or you could support a move to more energy production through renewable resources.

There is plenty of energy available if governments stop listening to the legacy industry lobbyists and actually focus on helping renewables instead of legislating against it.

This is definitely true - but it's highly expensive to do so... and I don't want the government paying for. I want free enterprise to pay for it.

Generally more expensive in the wrong ways and far less reliable. Nuclear is really the best.

Renewable can work to meet energy demand if done right and with redundancy.

That said, I would probably get this one instead, or at least first if you aren't already a bit experienced with PowerShell. If I could go back, perhaps I would have gotten that one first as well.

I don't have this one, but according to reviews it seems good.

Trusted platform module security defeated in 30 minutes, no soldering required

Sometimes, locking down a laptop with the latest defenses isn't enough.
Let’s say you’re a large company that has just shipped an employee a brand-new replacement laptop. And let’s say it comes preconfigured to use all the latest best security practices, including full-disk encryption using a trusted platform module, password-protected BIOS settings, UEFI SecureBoot, and virtually all other recommendations from the National Security Agency and NIST for locking down federal computer systems. And let’s say an attacker manages to intercept the machine. Can the attacker use it to hack your network?

tl:dr = SPI bus communicates in clear text. Use a BitLocker PIN/Password.

Hopefully this being in the media will change that.

      I wouldn't put a laser printer into a UPS.

If you lack plugs, and need protection, use a good power strip (for the printer) in one wall socket, use the APC in the other.

Jared, this isn't supposed to be a reply to you... I don't know why it did that.

Also dropping Nano from being a supported path sucks for people who were hoping for it to be a true small secure embedded install (Core requires a 32GB DISK!)

I think he means nano is available only for those with a datacenter licence.

Well that makes perfect sense, because Hyper-V Server is free, and does just Hyper-V. Nano Server should not be free, because it can do a LOT of things, in addition to Hyper-V. The list is long, and continues to grow.

Also, there's two versions of Nano Server: Datacenter and Standard

      Now what?

      Yes details please.

They always just stop working out of nowhere when you are "using" it. I'm so sick of it.

If you set up some VMs on Hyper-V, and never touch anything again, it'll go forever.

But as soon as you spend time importing/exporting, replication, VM settings, etc for a while, the hypervisor just completely loses it's stability for no real reason... causing you to need to restart the HV management service. And then eventually, you'll get crap like this below that requires a reboot:

Failed to register the service principal name 'Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service'.
Failed to register the service principal name 'Hyper-V Replica'.
Failed to register the service principal name 'Microsoft Virtual Console Service'.

I verified in AD they are registered, so I don't know wtf it's talking about. Though, I'm sure a reboot will make it all well again.

    • RE: Google Cloud as offsite backup. How to check if it's suitable for us or no and pricing ?

My point is that you shouldn't use "cloud" backup as a replacement for onsite backup. And if you do use something like that, it's fine if it slowly archives backups in the background, as your main on-site backups do their thing like normal, and you can restore if needed like normal.

@JaredBusch in the case of the domain being down can you still log in locally?

Same as any Windows server. There's domain logon and local user logon. Also, as matteo said, cached credentials.

Not to mention "other" ways if you have physical access to the server, or remote with iDrac/ilo.

Ransomware. I've seen cryto attack that encrypted all the VMs

That's not an issue of being on a domain. That's an issue caused by bad IT administration.

I have hypervisors on the domain and they haven't been encrypted.

Other companies had ransomware with hypervisors on the domain, and the VMs themself haven't been encrypted... maybe files inside the VM, but that part is hypervisor agnostic.
