    • Kimchi VM Guest Console Timeout Issue

Between Cockpit and Kimchi, I was able to get this far in a few minutes, from a fresh install:

      0_1500048953722_Untitled.jpg

When you click on the "Livetile" it opens up a new tab for the VM Console. Except it times out. Online information on this aspect is pretty much non-existent between a few quick Bing and Google searches.

Has anyone had this issue or been able to get the vm console working on Kimchi? The host is Fed25.

      TEST is using VNC
      TEST2 is using SPICE
...if that helps, both timeout after trying to connect.

I don't think I've ever seen one of your driving pics that showed under 80 mph.

The other day it showed 55 MPH 🙂

      Only explanation is broken speedometer

I did checkout osticket last week, as result of seeing a post, here on ML. It does look good and the hosted pricing is reasonable.

NTG has been hosting their own, it's pretty simple to do. But we'll likely be on Sodium in a week or two. Just a few little things need to be finalized for it to be at a point that we can flip over.

      Does my boss know this?

      She's the one that decided.

Why wouldn't you wait until it's a more finished product before putting something like this into actual production?

Sure, put not even alpha software in a test environment, but in production? No way! But I guess that depends on where you are and how many and what types of users it will effect.

You could set it up in a real test environment, and tell some users to throw in a ticket here and there, so you can provide Sodium with some real feedback.

Using Sodium as a ticket system - one that should evovle anyway - isn't so much of a problem that I see. Now when you reference the other features - that may be a different story.. though starting now, you can get use to some of the aspects of it as it's being developed - and know how it will work for you as more options are available.

Now - being part of the beta or even alpha isn't always the best - and while there can be several releases of Sodium a day.. that may or not be a problem and may or may not cause some problems...

Some times you just have to say Meh,.. WTH and go for it. Now - when you are talking about a few hundred to thousand PCs,.. Meh I'm not rebuilding all those... so - nope.

That's what I meant. If you work for a place such as the one I do, and you rip out the current fully featured, polished, supported, and working ticketing system... and throw in something like Sodium (no offense, I'm excited about it), your in for some major trouble from all aspects.

That's why I said if it's just a few users/computers, sure, go for it if it fits in your environment.

However, I could stick it in a test environment on the back burner... and ask a few users such as those in IT and some others to throw up a ticket in there once in a while for testing. Using that it could potentially replace the current system and save the company money. But before going too far, I'd keep it internal only to just myself and a few other IT coworkers.

Seems weird to me that this can happen. This inodes thing is completely new to me. I had to look it up, and know almost nothing about it. Seems like a major Linux turn-off if this happens for no reason.

Maybe I need a good explanation, if someone doesn't mind.

      Money. No need to ask.

What's best for the company is to have their services and data available when needed, while spending appropriately to get that accomplished.

How this is done best is decided via the expertise of IT, not stakeholders.

      3 things:

      1. SSLVPN is a paid feature, looks like (perhaps by default) there's two for free.
      2. The answer was in the log; the default port was being used.
      3. Specified the correct port after the IP, and it connected just fine.

I'm wondering if that specific part of guide is still relevant... the 1MB block size .vhdx. I mean, is it still recommended if using XFS instead of ext4? It mentions it for ext4, but I don't use that anymore.

@dashrender I care about it, but because it's automatically replicated after each write there's a fully up-to-date, ready-to-go backup of it the next U down at all times. Could/would also push nightly backups offsite somewhere I suppose.

Looks like Raid 5 for SSDs can also, possibly, shorten their lifespan because of the parity writes: https://serverfault.com/questions/513909/what-are-the-main-points-to-avoid-raid5-with-ssd

Yes, but with enterprise drives and cache buffering, that's trivial. You are typically looking at decades before failure.

850 pros are not enterprise drives.

@tim_g What are the implications of this, do you know? For what it's worth none of these drives do the amber light thing in either server, all green and they report as SSDs etc. in the lifecycle tooling.

They may work great for 5 years straight... or they may give errors randomly after 5 months for no apparent reason. Performance may be degraded, or it may not. PERC or other features may be lost without Dell's firmware on the SSDs. Your data may be perfectly safe, or it may not be.

Odds of the above going not in your favor are more likely than having Dell's firmware on them.

I wouldn't do it on production servers. But it's your call.

I'm guessing she means switch email providers... if you have hotmail, she won't hire you until you switch to gmail.
