Is there an easy way to remove the extended security permissions (ACLs) from folders in Linux without deleting and recreating the folder?

Circled in red is what I'm talking about:

I finally had a clear night since getting my new camera. Although I wasn't prepared for the surprise clear night, I still got out for a few minutes to get a decent shot of M 42 (Orion Nebula) before my portable power unit died.

I'm excited to report that with only less than 20 minutes of data via EAA live stacking, I was able this get this awesome shot in my insanely light polluted area thanks to the L-Pro filter.

This gives me a lot of hope that once I am able to get out there and get a couple hours of data, I'll be able to get something awesome.

Below, M 42, an ad-hoc 18 minutes of data with a blown out core and a satellite streaking across (thanks Elon).

Hoping for some more clear skies in the near future and a trip to some darker skies!

Updating with an auto-stacked photo ~58 minutes of data, and some minor post-processing. I want to stack properly, get some more data, add in some calibration frames. Going to add in here to track progress and compare.

@dave247 said in Trying to correctly understand core licensing in a vmware environment:

Let's say I'm running vSphere with 3 ESXi hosts in a cluster for fail-over and load balancing. My Server 2016 vm will only ever be running on ONE of them at any given time. However, I am seeing now that I still need to license ALL of the physical cores in all three of my hosts. Is this correct?
      Details:
      Host 1: 2 Processors, 4 cores each
      Host 2: 2 Processors, 4 cores each
      Host 3: 2 Processors, 10 cores each
      Total Cores = 36

      Yes.

      Do you have software assurance?
      https://www.timothygruber.com/windows-server-2016/windows-server-2016-licensing-simplified/

      You need to buy:

      Host 1 = 8x 2-core packs
      Host 2 = 8x 2-core packs
      Host 3 = 10x 2-core packs

It's 16 cores need licensed minimum per server. The third server is 20 cores, so you need two extra 2-core packs.

Unless you are running Windows Server Datacenter Edition, you need to purchase the above for every two VMs you run.

New (to me) telescope arrived today!

Nice, going to use it for photography?

Yes, astrophotography. This is a bigger telescope than I had before. 203mm aperture, 2032mm focal length, f/10 native.

I finally got a chance to test it out for about an hour last night on Jupiter mostly visually. I looked at it at about 6100mm focal length @ f/30. It looked so awesome. I've never seen it that big and clear in person. I hooked the camera up for a bit but didn't go well due to the balcony being so shaky and Jupiter started going behind a tree by that time. 🤷

I'm hoping to get some more clear nights soon so I can give it a real go. Clear nights are truly a rarity these days here.

    • RE: Managing Color Printing

Change the default printer settings on your print server to black and white for each printer.

Then it will default to b&w for everyone it's deployed to.

We use PaperCut on top of that, and have a script for certain copiers that gives users a warning when printing in color and gives an option to print in b&w, or continue with color.

Dumbbell Nebula (M27, Apple Core Nebula)
      2024.10.19 @ 22:00
      Alt: 70°

The Dumbbell Nebula is one of the brightest planetary nebulae in the sky, located around 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula. What you’re seeing is the glowing remnants of a dying star that has shed its outer layers, with the central star still visible at the core. The distinctive "Apple Core" or "Dumbbell" shape comes from the expanding gas.

Interestingly, M27 was the first planetary nebula to ever be discovered, by Charles Messier in 1764.

      Setup:
      C8-XLT + f/6.3 reducer
      iOptron mount, tracking
      Ares-C Pro camera
      Optolong L-Pro filter
      SharpCap Pro & Siril

Total exposure time: 6 hours and 15 minutes
      Focal length: 1208mm
Processing: minimal, time & weather constraints

    • RE: Fedora 28 Server - Linux 101 - How do you partition your drives

The only time I don't let / use up all my drive space is (usually every time) when I know I will have important data or a need for an amount of storage to be separate from the OS. I like to keep the OS stateless, and the stateful data separate, when possible or when it makes sense.

This has already saved me a few times, when having to reload or restore the OS while keeping the /data or /home partitions intact. All cases were when using LVM.

One could say "well, backups", but you know what's faster? Not having to restore from backups because you made a simple decision when installing the OS that has no negative consequence, only potential benefits.

@momurda I guess what is the question? This sounds like a run of the mill website server request to me. a user having no clue what they need.

Did you want to complain about the request or was there a question of "what server should I use for this?". To which the only reasonable question would be whatever your hypervisor is running on.

And then, you'd have to create a VM for it, and tune it as your needs adjust.

Yeah, my blog statistics generate way more data than that per day and it's literally nothing.

Do you schedule shutdown for your PoE WiFi APs ?

I have 30x Cisco Aironet 1830 and I feel after 2-3 months of ongoing power one of them might hang and such.

The switch is connected to 6KVA UPS so they never get power off

We use UBNT APs so we never have to worry about them doing weird things or having to power down every so often for no reason.

      @wrx7m said in O365 question:

      @scottalanmiller
Go back and read the link I posted to MS support

I am just saying, currently, it is the supported method to have an Exchange server on-prem to manage mailboxes IF you want to use aadconnect.

Also, they hinted at a new service that would do away with the Exchange on-prem requirement at Ignite last year and the year before.

      Per this link -

      https://practical365.com/exchange-server/removing-premises-exchange-servers-migrating-office-365/

      Where it says this:

In addition, even if you have directory synchronization in place without running the Hybrid Configuration Wizard, you still cannot manage most of the recipient tasks from the cloud.

That is by design... and is what you want! Because, you would then be "managing most of the recipient tasks" from on-prem AD instead... which synchronizes to the cloud.

When you use AADConnect and synchronize users/mailboxes from on-prem AD to O365, it's easier because you don't have to dick around in the O365 Admin portal... you do everything from within your AD users console! It's so much easier and faster.

A hybrid configuration is not at all the recommended set-up, in fact, it's the least recommended setup. Fully hosted on O365 is best, fully hosted on-prem Exchange is second, Hybrid is last (because it increases the complexity AND costs of everything).

The 8-port Dell H740p is capable of data speeds of 1.5GB/s per SAS/SATA port.

Holy crap.. This is awesome. Thank you so much. Only thing that suck is the 90 day reissue, but who cares! Its free!

It doesn't suck at all. I have been using Let's Encrypt on my VPS and Blog for a while now and haven't had to do or look at a single thing regarding SSL certs since I've set it up. Not only that, it was super simple to set up.

It's one of those things you can "set it and forget it", literally. With regular SSL providers, you'll have to manually renew and update the SSL cert every year or two. With Let's Encrypt, you never have to do a damn thing, ever... after you take a minute to set it up. It's clearly way easier and less manual than using a paid CA.

@guyinpv said in I have to change cloud drive service yet again:

@Obsolesce said in I have to change cloud drive service yet again:

Users aren't saving a copy to their hard drive, then putting it back after someone else moves or renames it?

Using the NextCloud Sync client, all the files are already local on their drives. So the users are using CTRL-X to cut files and paste them into other folders. And occasionally, those file operations reverse and a moved file goes back to where it was. Or a renamed files gets reversed. Or worse, a renamed and moved file because a duplicate in its original folder, leaving us with 2 copies with multiple names.

      That's the issue.

If a file is on a bunch of different computers, someone moves it on their local synced folder, NC will have to tell it to move or rename on everyone else's computer too... and perhaps not everyone else's computer is online at that time or syncing to NC. And that person may end up making changes, moving, or renaming before it gets a chance to sync first.
