I have a Google alert setup for "Webroot" and yesterday it turned up a couple interesting videos of a guy testing our rollback feature by infecting his PC with unknown malware. Thought it was pretty cool to see the feature in action. Video one is the infection process and video two is the results of the rollback:

RE: Frog in the Boiling Waterposted in IT Careers
@momurda I think they left the brainstem so that basic functions still worked and just scooped out the rest of the brain. Kind of like that headless chicken that lived for years:

Too many monitors and you don't notice stuff anymore. More than two and it's too far in my peripheral vision.

I think your stance makes sense Scott. Always better to take the high road if possible, and any necessary ranting can always be taken offline somewhere

The other factor is with the economy crashing, lots of older people aren't retiring on schedule, which slows the pipeline for newbies to join.

It has @steve notifications? That is a nice feature. I've been getting used to having that on the webroot community, and now I miss having it on SW.

RE: MANS ALLERGY TO TECHNOLOGYposted in Water Closet
@scottalanmiller yeah, allergies can have a large psychological component. That reminds me of a funny story about my gluten intolerance. Near the beginning, my wife had accused me of it being psychological in nature. We went to a place called the Texas Roadhouse, where I had a steak and veggies. I ended up getting a gluten reaction, and she didn't believe that there could possibly be gluten in those two things I ordered. When we got home I looked it up online and it turns out they use flour in their grill shortening. It was nice to be vindicated in a completely blind accidental experiment

RE: Embracing Subscription Licensingposted in Self Promotion
Great article - covers all the bases. Separating the pricing from the model is key too. The only benefit I can still see to ownership is that you can eek out more time on old software if the business is going through lean times, whereas in the subscription model you'd get cut off. Similar to owning an old car and keeping it running with duct tape and baling wire.

RE: Netflix and AT&T strike deal to boost streaming speedsposted in News
Another hit to net neutrality - AT&T charges you to deliver the data, and charges Netflix to deliver the data. It's as if Amazon paid Fedex to deliver the package, and then you had to pay Fedex to deliver the package.

RE: Facebook doing away with annoying requests to send friends gift cardsposted in News
My bet is that Starbucks et al weren't making enough money to cover what they were paying Facebook for the privilege of getting suggested. Contracts are ending and now FB is scrapping the program.

RE: Strategic vs. Tactical - How much of Each Do You Do?posted in IT Discussion
I shoot for a 50/50 ratio - half my day working on day to day tactical stuff, and the other half on strategic projects and planning. When that ratio skews too high on the tactical side then I know I need more resources.
