Also Lenovo has essentially admitted that they have no validation process no the bundleware they install. As long as someone pays them some money, they'll put anything on there. Lizard Squad might as well pay them to automatically add all Lenovo laptops to their botnet.

I think IT needs to be licensed for safety reasons, given all the security breaches and releases of data that happen lately.

How can they say the passwords for other sites where not taken? if they have the master passwords they have everything.
Apparently the database where the master password hashes are stored was compromised, but not the database that stores all of your actual passwords that are used to log into sites. I'm assuming they are kept separate both for security reasons, and because the encryption on your site passwords has to be reversible whereas the master password they can just store a hash.

Yeah, replacing a new fan isn't a big deal - I'd do it just to avoid the noise. Or find someone on craigslist who does it for a reasonable price. Might as well get them to put in a mod chip while you're at it

I don't think certifying IT would do that. Maybe certifying a department, but because individuals are not often responsible for these things I am not sure how that process would work. That would be a little like certifying a mechanic so that someone doesn't drive too fast. The reality is, the owner of the car is at fault for 99.99% of accidents. The mechanic is rarely the one at fault.
Since IT does not get final decision making power over what they do, having IT licensed does not appear to solve the problem unless you make them like doctors or lawyers where they are allowed to over step the CEO and cannot be fired for doing so.
That is a good point. I think doctors and lawyers are only allowed to report to other doctors and lawyers, which makes sense. Maybe the model would be engineers, who can be held liable for buildings or bridges that collapse.

What does licensing look like to you? What are it's pro's and con's?
Something like this:
http://ncees.org/licensure/The cons are barriers to entry and sometimes licensing is just there to keep new people out. But I think in the case of IT it's worth getting better quality control.

Anyone want to help beta test Webroot?posted in IT Discussion
We're looking for more people to participate in our beta program. Initially it's just going to be beta testing the consumer version, but we might expand it further down the line. If you're interested, either send me a PM or email me at ntolstoshev at webroot.com.

RE: Can You Trust Closed Source Software?posted in News
No, you can't. Richard Stallman's been preaching that for years. If you don't have the source then your software is a black box and you don't really know what it's doing. You still have to evaluate the cost as to whether that's worth it given the cost of what you are trying to protect.

INTJ, the rarest and best one

"I" is a surprise to me. "J" makes total sense though.
Yeah, I think I'm a good example of why introversion and social anxiety are separate issues. I've learned how to socialize well, and I'm good around people I know, but being around big crowds drains me. Part of what helped me learn how to socialize well was doing phone support for QuickBooks. A year of being on the phone 8 hours a day with strangers teaches you how to make small talk very well. The reason many introverts aren't good at socializing is because they never get any practice at it. The traditional definition of introversion vs extroversion is that introverts gain energy by being alone and extroverts gain energy by being around people.

Fun fact - that's the town in Colorado where I live. Guess we'll be getting fewer potholes fixed this winter.
Ha I didn't read the full location because I just assumed it was Erie, PA which is like 2 hours north of me.
Our town motto is "the other Erie"
