    • RE: Compatible toner / ink vs. genuine toner / ink

I'd agree with others that the compatibles can be hit and miss, depending on the manufacturer. For HP, I have been burned with compatibles (and in some cases Brother too). It's a bit of a gamble but can work well for you if you find a good compatible maker.

As for pricing, I like BlueDogInk.com for OEM cartridges.

It is a no-go for us. It seems you must have Enterprise Plus: http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/compare. I should have checked there before posting. Maybe someone else will find this helpful.

Is that all you have to do, add SSD's and ESXi will do the rest? Do you have to have a certain level of ESXi (like Essentials Plus or Enterprise)?

I did not see any version limitations listed here other than needing VCenter:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2058983. So if I read it correctly, the Essentials bundle should work (which is what I have).

    • VSphere 5.5 and Virtual Flash Cache / Device - Do You Use It?

I have one VCenter instance and 3 ESXi hosts - 1 running 5.5 and 2 running 5.1U1. I was going to upgrade the two that are behind pretty soon. But, while doing some work in VCenter yesterday the virtual flash cache options caught my eye.

One of the hosts I have runs a SQL 2008 box which serves as the back end database for our Epicor ERP system. There's also a server on that same host that acts as an Epicor application server. The server is a Cisco UCSC-C240-M3S with a couple of Xeon E5-2665 processors, 128 GB RAM, and 16 300 GB 10K SAS drives in OBR 10. Epicor speed is still better than it was before we went virtual (take that, Epicor), but people always want faster. If I could throw a couple of SSDs in some of the 8 extra drive bays we have, it would really give us a boost.

For those that have used SSDs as a cache device with VSphere 5.5, how much improvement have you seen for database servers? We are about 85/15 read/write but getting closer to 80/20.

And moreover, how many SSDs should I use for flash in this host if I were to do it?

Thanks to all who responded here. We're going to roll with PSX's idea.

I will also tell you I posted this somewhere else and did not receive as many responses as I did here.

What other device you going to use? If you buy the right thing you can shitcan the entire ASA

I already had a Cisco RV180 lying around and used it for the camera traffic. The only thing I do not have setup right now is static routes.

Most people have said just ROBOCOPY the files from the old file server (in this case, SBS 2003) to the new one (2012 R2 Virtual Machine) and it will keep the permissions intact and echo the different server name...correct?

Something like this should suffice: robocopy /mir /sec /secfix "source" "destination"

    • What Does Your Company Do for SEO?

For the past several years, the company where I work has been looking to better their Google search results. Ok, make that 5 years. We talked about maybe using Google AdWords at one point (and did not pursue it), we had a company "optimize" our site around certain key words, and there are still improvements to be made. I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to SEO, so what do you / your company do to better your online visibility? Obviously no developer can guarantee your Google search results will be high, but there are things that can be done to increase visibility in search engines.

I should also add that the company has a Facebook and Twitter page. There are updated here and there but not consistently. This is more advertising through social media, but I wanted to mention it.

    • Windows Server Core Install - When Would You Use It?

I am building a Server 2012 VM this morning, and I thought to myself, when would someone use the core install instead of the GUI? I know people probably do that, but when does that make more sense? And additionally, why would you do that instead of just using some Linux distro if you really want command line?

Just say no to fax clients. With granular access to the GUI itself, you can allow folks to login and send faxes without adding another piece of software to the mix:

      @NetworkNerd I'd like to point a few things. 1

      1. QoS over the internet means nothing. Your carrier is not going to respect your tags unless its on a P2P or MPLS circuit.

No, but QoS before it hits the Internet does the majority of what most people need. It is normally your own WAN link that is the choke point, not the open Internet. If it was, nothing we expect to work would work.

Yep - that is how I should have worded it. Sorry if that was not clear from my post.

Amen to that. I try not to run too many things at once so my computer won't implode from RAM usage.

OK, elastix is setup. pretty painless.

Internal extension calling is setup and working, pretty painless.

dialing in from out and out from in....not working. i've got a trunk setup and in/out routes setup and assigned to extension...bah any advice?

When you say not working, can you be more specific? Is it 30 seconds and then the call dies, "all circuits are busy now," or something else entirely?

Something I haven't seen mentioned here, When you join another DC to your SBS Domain, you have either 15 or 25 days (I just can't remember now) to turn off the old SBS server or it will start turning itself off - FYI.

That timer only starts after you promote it. As a member DC it can be there indefinitely.

Good thing - I just added a new DC to a SBS 2003 domain this afternoon as a member DC and then saw this thread. I was starting to worry a little after that previous comment.

I guess follow me wasn't good enough for roaming?

      Does that work for softphones?

It works at the extension level. You can turn on follow me to ring another extension / group of extensions at the same time as yours, after a certain number of seconds, ring each in succession, etc. You can even add an external number to follow me settings so someone can ring their cell phone in addition to their desk phone.

OK so the iso is in my datastore. It's also mounted on this vm's vcdrom. now.....

I'd actually recommend just starting over with a new VM that is capable of running RHEL 64-bit (pretty sure that is how you must mark it in VMWare) and boot from the ISO. That is the easiest way to do it in my opinion.
