    • RE: Elastix Endpoint Configurator model updates

I actually started down that path in Q1 of 2013 when we deployed Elastix at my main site but ran out of time. Back then the T32G was not part of the configurator, but I did find this gem, which may help you:
      link text.

I got as far as adding the T32G to the phone database on the server so that it would show as an option when Elastix detects the phone. But that's as far as I made it.

    • Weigh in on Holiday Career Topics

The holiday season is coming. We're looking to develop topics for a holiday edition of the Nerd Journey Podcast. We'd love for you to weigh in on the questions below and would talk through the community feedback on the air. Please answer the following questions (all through the lens of career):

      1. What are you thankful for in your career / current job?
      2. What are some career-related items you should be thankful for but have not been in the past?
      3. What has the effect of your job been on your holiday experiences (i.e. allowed you to unplug, forced you to work, etc.)?
      4. How do you allow yourself / force yourself to unplug on holidays (assuming you get some time off)?
      5. From a professional standpoint, what are your resolutions for 2019?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • The Day They Stopped Whispering - My Tribute to The Geek Whisperers

      0_1511733593381_GeekWhisperersFinal.png
      Image taken from http://geek-whisperers.com/2017/10/the-final-whispers-episode-140/

August 29, 2017 – I was there the day they stopped whispering. It was the day episode 140 was recorded at a podcast booth on the VMworld show floor. In my mind, this had all the makings of a great athlete retiring and would bring about the end of an era. I was fortunate enough to be a part of it.

      Getting into Podcasts

The real story begins much earlier in the year. I needed to renew my VCP-DCV 5 before September and had been ramping up to start studying again. But I was also working a job with an hour commute each direction and needed to find a way to create more study time. I started listening to the vBrownBag series of podcasts on the VCP-DCV 6 as I drove to and from work. I would also listen or watch from my desk during part of lunch, before work, or after work.

As I searched for the vBrownBag series in iTunes, I began to see recommendations for other podcasts. One of them was called The Geek Whisperers, and I decided to give it a listen. I don’t remember the first episode I chose, but I feel like it might have been Episode 131 or somewhere close to it. Much like Lay’s potato chips, I couldn’t stop at just one. After listening to the newer episodes, I decided to start from the beginning.

You can read the rest of the story here - http://blog.thenetworknerd.com/2017/11/26/the-day-they-stopped-whispering-my-tribute-to-the-geek-whisperers/

      @JaredBusch
I don't see the option in embedded FreePBX either. You may have to edit amportal.conf as per this article: http://www.freepbx.org/forum/freepbx/general-help/day-night-indicator. Let me know if that works. I've had people ask me about this but never messed around with it.

    • Advocacy Programs for the Tech Newbie?

This is my version of a community poll for an upcoming Nerd Journey episode.

Do you see participating in advocacy programs as valuable? Why or why not?

If you could recommend a tech community newbie join one or more vendor advocacy programs to boost his / her career, what would they be? What's the right number to join, and why?

Outside of the larger tech vendors, what advocacy programs exist that you think others may not know about?

    • Nitro Reader and Slow File Open Times

For about the last 6-12 months we have been putting Nitro Reader on our new PCs as an alternative to Adobe because I think Nitro is better overall. But I feel like in the last few weeks, we've been prompted to change people back to Adobe Reader. Somehow Nitro is taking longer to open large PDF files. The open time for Adobe Reader seems to be sometimes 5-7 seconds less than it takes Nitro for larger PDF files. I've stood and watched people in other departments try to open large PDF files and seen this happen consistently. We're talking about opening files in a SMB share on a server with 15K SAS drives.

I personally really like Nitro Reader and have not experienced this issue. But then again, I am not really opening large PDF files as people in HR / AR / AP / Quality might be.

Has anyone else experienced the issue I mention here?

      @Vladimir-Eremin said:

Veeam tracks all VMs by unique moref ID. The upgrade process seems to have resulted in morefID changes. Thus, the jobs containing previously existed VMs failed. Once VMs were re-added to the job, everything started working as expected.

However, I should mention that typically in-place upgrade shouldn't lead to morefID changes.

      Thanks.

Since this was a complete ESXi rebuild on a newer version of ESXi, that makes complete sense. Thanks for sharing!

Join.me's not realy designed for remote tech support work. If you're looking to do remote tech support work, take a look at LogMeIn Rescue. It's not free, but hopefully you're charging for the work you're doing.

I completely agree join.me is not for remote support. You won't be able to see things like UAC prompts that come up while power users may be logged into the machine. LMI Rescue can work quite well as @alexntg mentions. I personally like the free version of LMI in conjunction with LMI Central (despite LMI's recent force to go to a paid version).

    • Amplifying Your vCenter Alarms

      0_1533596186124_feature_alarm_1.png

While some people may wake up each morning based on circadian rhythm alone, many of us require an alarm to wake up on time. What does the alarm clock (or alarm app) really do for you? It allows you to set a specific time at which a loud noise will happen. The noise does not just happen for a split second. The noise continues until you press a button to make it stop. The noise will wake the sleeper because it is set to be in close proximity to him / her.

Let’s break down that scenario further. The alarm’s noise is something you want to happen at a specific time and continue until manually stopped. If you want the alarm to go off at 6 AM, for example, that specific time is a condition (or trigger) that will activate the alarm. Based on the trigger being true (6 AM reached), the alarm activates, and an action is taken. The action in this example is noise. Pressing the button to turn off your alarm is an acknowledgement of the trigger and stops the alarm action from continuing.

You can read the rest of the story about alarms in the datacenter here - http://blog.thenetworknerd.com/2018/08/06/amplifying-your-vcenter-alarms.

@alexntg just said that some other people had this happen a month ago. Apparently it is a bug that they've not been able to get fixed for a while.

      Well, that's better news.

No kidding - I was afraid they had banned @scottalanmiller from discussions about RAID 5 only.

Since the 25th is vendor-sponsored and already arranged for the most part, I do not see it moving.

The 31st is out for us. We are The Pumpkin People of Saginaw, TX. And there's no way we can let down our fans. Something on the 30th is iffy at best for us because we'll be carving.

It's not not that I don't want to see everyone. It's complicated.
