    • SW discontinuing MDM

      "Hey there,

As of July 19, 2017, the Spiceworks Mobile Device Management (MDM) dashboard and alerts will no longer be available from your Spiceworks Inventory application.

We are thankful for your use of Spiceworks and your adoption of these features. Unfortunately, usage of the free MDM feature set has not been widespread among Spiceworks users. To better focus our engineering efforts on creating products lots of IT pros love, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue MDM.

What does this mean for you? We recognize that making major changes to your mobile device management system takes time, so we wanted to let you know four months before the change to give you time to make the transition.

You have a couple of options for MDM after July 19. If you like the IBM MaaS360 MDM experience, you can try MDM through IBM MaaS360’s free 30-day test drive. You can also buy a subscription to IBM MaaS360 and manage your mobile devices through their service, outside of Spiceworks Inventory, for a 50% discount on all enrolled devices. Mobile MaaSter Shawn Burns can talk you through details on pricing and Green Guy Kumar can answer your technical questions. Of course, there are other MDM solutions as well.

Next steps: Please install the Spiceworks 7.5 patch. It will remove the MDM feature set which would otherwise cause errors when the API gets removed. The MDM data that is in Inventory before July 19 will continue to be available to you in the Devices view, but you will not be able to update it. Check out our support post for more details.

Thanks for your continued support of Spiceworks. Our support team is here for you so please email us with any questions.

      Marni B.
Product Marketing Manager, IT Pro Products"

To be honest, their MDM solution sucked. I was never really pleased with it. So it doesn't bother me to see it go.

Kind of interesting in concept. Charges has to be outrageous though because one would be paying for both Azure and VMware licenses at the same time. Suppose Azure annually would be comparable to physical hardware on-prem throughout its lifetime.

Recently I discovered that I can restore a VM from Veeam on a VMware workload to Azure. I thought that was a twist.

Like the rest of SW's stuff, it was a tie in to get IT Buyers to purchase one of their vendor's products. It would support up to 250 devices for free. Any more than that and you had to begin purchasing.

I also got a lot of phone calls from the vendor because of it.

I have 2 users starting next week, might have to use your script @NerdyDad
I usually just use the Copy User function in ADUC then fill out the name, make adjustments to group membership.
That looks essentially like the Copy User option from ADUC, but in PS, and it makes folders and such too.
I wonder though, are users able to answer these questions about themselves?

Unfortunately not because the user running the script has to be a domain admin in order to create the new user, add to groups create mailboxes, etc.

Anybody can be killed by anything. The general population is looking at this the wrong way. If we outlaw guns, then criminals are going to begin using knives or bombs. Try to outlaw those, and people will begin to use rope, or cars, or construction equipment. The point it, where do you draw the line at "keeping people safe". Criminals will always have guns. Why? Because they are criminals. They obviously show no care for the law. They are going to do what they want to do.

This isn't a government issue that can be solved with a law. This is a society issue on how we respect and treat one another.

      Carrier pigeon?

This is where ham radio comes in handy.

I personally plan on getting a CB radio again -- now that I can hear and all.

There is a digital mode to connect a computer to a ham radio and an operator would be able to send an email to another radio that was designed for such traffic. There is a little bit of setup to take care of ahead of time but could work in a pinch if necessary. However, you have to have a general class license to be able to do that.

@NerdyDad As far as I know, we'd have to have an Essentials Plus license for that 😕 (which would be about $6000, and upper management doesn't wanna pay for that).

I can understand tight wad upper management.

Then just make sure that all 3 of your hosts can access the same sets of backup copies of your VMs in case you have to resort to those.

This actually seems pretty cool: https://www.amazon.com/S-ResMed-Personal-Sleep-Solution/dp/B00NP52QE0/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1486478635&sr=8-1&keywords=S%2B+by+ResMed

"It uses sonar, and those ultrasonic pulses can see straight through blanket (and PJ's) to monitor the movement of your chest as your breathe your way through the different stages of sleep."

Note that a San Diego, California based company, ResMed purchased Zeo's intellectual property. Sadly, ResMed produces another of the cannot possibly (and doesn't) work bedside sleep monitors, the S+. It bathes the sleeper in microwave radiation and uses the Doppler-shift in reflected microwaves to detect upper body motion and respiration. Aside from bathing its user in microwaves, which seems somewhat contradictory to health-promoting, and having no idea what's going on inside the sleeper's brain, thus being more wrong than right, it is confused by anyone else who might be sharing the same bed. No thanks.

      https://www.grc.com/zeo.htm

So...who wants to be cooked while they sleep?

      I could use a base tan 😄

Laura is so unbelievably afraid of radiation it's almost a phobia so that's a no go anyway

Have you ever informed her that she is bombarded with gamma rays from the sun all of the time and there is nothing that she can do about it?

Also, bananas have a naturally produced ion of potassium in them. Every time you eat a banana, you are getting a dose of radiation.

On top of that, supposedly, Mountain Dew is also radioactive, sort of like a glow stick, or a minion.

Facebook open-sources new suite of Linux kernel components and tools

      POSTED ON OCT 30, 2018

An integral part of Facebook’s engineering culture has always been our development work on open source solutions that solve real-world production issues and address key challenges in modern large-scale cloud computing. Today, we are announcing a suite of open source Linux kernel components and related tools that address critical fleet management issues. These include resource control, resource utilization, workload isolation, load balancing, measuring, monitoring, and much more.
