Must remember to buy some Hershey's Chocolate for @aboyd before Friday afternoon.

We can easily get some on the way there 🙂

I work about 20 minutes from the Hershey Plant in Hershey, PA. Maybe I'll pick some up for Mangocon. I should really get that booked....

Total suck - my wife made plans and I can't go to MLCon 😞

No, she made plans and didn't say anything about you not going to MLCon.

oh yeah - when I said I wanted to skip those plans - shit hit the fan. 😞

Conveniently forget about her plans and catch the plane to Rochester.

      yeah.. I wish.

She did it to you. Precedence set.

LOL - She has traveled without me once in the past 7 years. So this Precedence isn't that helpful.

I think the precedent Scott is referring to is the part where she forgot that other things are in the works and made a different plan. Or had you not already told her you were doing MLCon?

@IRJ As in, you shouldn't be scanning everything on the open internet.

The FBI, NSA and other 3 letter government agency's will come knocking down your door.

They have neither the resources nor the inclination to go after everyone that runs a simple scan. They don't in fact have the resources to go after all the people who have committed significantly damaging illegal acts let alone anything else.

Moving away from their traditional game play is doing wonders from Nintendo. Breath of the Wild would have worked just as well as a new IP as it does as a Zelda game. It's not perfect but it is very good.

You won't fool me. Nintendo got me to try too may Zelda games. I've been burned way too many times. No more Nintendo crap in this house. Wii and Wii U were their last two chances. I'm not going to be that idiot again.

Breath of the Wild is the first launch game I've ever felt genuinely justified the purchase of the system.

If other decent titles come out eventually that's just icing on this delicious Switch cake.

Still, they built the mechanism/ability of including updates in the install media. It would take all of 1 engineer all of 1 hour to compile an updated ISO and stick it online.

Over the course of 10 years it probably would have reduced the load on their update servers by a fantastical amount.

Would it? Does MS publish a Win 7 ISO for the public? I don't recall ever seeing one.

Not officially I guess. MS never published links or publicized the info themselves but for a long time it was possible to download ISOs for many products including Win 7 from Digital River as long as you knew the direct link location. There were a few websites that maintained extensive lists.

I think this is not so much the case these days.

When did that happen? they were with Cradlepoint for the longest time.

Sure looks like it's still Cradlepoint.

@JaredBusch probably the best show ever...

Nope. Not ever. I am quite familiar with the author and the premise of the books. I read a decent sample of book one years and years ago and said nope.

I am an avid reader of the sci/fi and fantasy genres, with a library of ~1000 physical books, but I do not like that series.

What would you put above Game of Thrones? I don't agree in a general sense but it may be a good opportunity to find some great material

I honestly have trouble figuring out why the show is as popular as it is. Fun to watch as a reader of the books but context is seriously light on the ground in the show.

I had a coworker who was super into the show at like 2-3 seasons in and didn't know the names of 1/2 the characters. Which I totally understand. They are in such a rush to hit the major points they barely let you get to know anyone.

I had zero issues remembering characters. I think that just has to do with the person honestly.

      It may have been related...

Also, if you're just staying in Illinois because of the booze, Michigan has WAY better beer and is just across the Lake. You could literally stop in damn near any small town throughout the state and find a decent brewery.

Even if you only consider Three Floyd's brewery in Munster, Indiana has way better beer than Illinois. If you also throw in Upland's wheat they win hands down.

And, well, Wisconsin has always been superior to Illinois in booze and alcoholics.

I can't think of a good reason to move to Iowa, Misery, or any other state to the South...

Upland is an Indiana brewery! But yeah the Michigan and Wisconsin brewing scenes are pretty good. I'm partial to New Glarus' fruit beers not much of anyone out there doing quite the same thing.

Edit: Wow, I'm asleep at the wheel you were talking about Indiana beer in that part of the post...

I will admit to ignorance on the 5e front. 4e left a bad taste and I never really looked at it.

Hard to blame you. But when I decided to restart my online campaign, I decided to go with 5e to give it a fair shake.

3.5 definitely has some flexibility and is my sweet spot for D&D though I prefer other systems.

Same for me. I started playing during the 1e years and have moved along with the editions. I really like 3.5e the best of all the D&D editions. That is why I have recently talked to my players and we are migrating our campaign back to 3.5e.
      https://obelisk.daerma.com/topic/91/daerma-adventures-is-conveting-back-to-3-5e

You get all the advantages of the Pathfinder community/material as well which is a really nice advantage to sticking with the older version. I still prefer 5E if I have to play D&D though.

I've been thinking of moving to Pathfinder. Need to get the books.

I really like what Pazio has done to the ruleset. It's still 100% compatible with 3.5 but they've been adding and updated a lot of stuff. It's a bit more crunchy (or about the same) but if you liked 3.5 you'll love a lot of the additions that Pathfinder adds.

Humble Bundle did a collection of Pathfinder stuff not too long ago that I picked up. The basic system books and a couple different adventure paths. At some point I need to open those up and see what's what.

I'd like to do something like this when the two new guys get more accustomed to actually roleplaying. Combat seems to draw people in but when the roleplaying ends up being the most fun imo

I've never witnessed someone make that transition. People who like it long term tend to join for the role playing. The combat stuff tends to turn those people off so you risk losing people if there is too much of that and too little role play.

So much this. You will never convert people from one to another style of play. Yeah sure, the odd person might, but I can say that in all my years of playing, I have never met said person.

If you try and force it you will have nothing but unhappy players or DM.

We certainly have role playing and there are rare nights that we have no combat at all, but it is rare. We are a combat encounter focused bunch really.

That does not mean that we have no story or roleplaying.
Both of these happened in game:

      https://daerma.com/history-lore/arg-discusses-the-origins-of-the-power-masters-and-the-ancients/

I'd never try to convert them I just need to give them breathing room to open up a little to the RP part of the game. I think I'd actually have a lot more fun DM'ing than I would playing but I need to learn a lot more about...everything practically.

Hard to make a transition when the system actively discourages role play.

It is the players not the system, barring 4e.

Recent editions of D&D are largely a miniatures battle first and an RPG as a way distant second(at best) priority.

While 4e was this, 5e is not. Prior to moving to Chicagoland, I was a player in a D&D group every other Friday in a 3.5e campaign. That campaign was many, many nights of story encounters and the dice were rolled more for skill checks than combat. It all comes down to the players.

If you are interested in story input and role playing from players you probably want to look at other systems. If you are happy with the way things go currently then play on!

This is certainly true. there are definitely other systems out there for a more pure roleplaying/story-telling game.

I will admit to ignorance on the 5e front. 4e left a bad taste and I never really looked at it. 3.5 definitely has some flexibility and is my sweet spot for D&D though I prefer other systems.

Players definitely influence what goes on heavily and if you don't have buy in from most or all of the group to a significant degree there is little point in switching things up. Even if another system might support their priorities in a better fashion.

I like iced tea a lot as a sub for other flavored beverages. I drink mine unsweetened so as to get the most benefit. Also still going to have some caffeine in if you do black or green teas. Could soften the blow of coming off the stuff you usually drink.

If you're group is open to other systems. I'm in love with FATE. FATE is kind of the one-sized fits all system so it does a lot of things surprisingly well as long as you have a creative, and open, gaming group.

Fate is definitely a good one, it is based on FUDGE. Both Fate and FUDGE are OGL these days.

There are a number of interesting games created using Fate like Spirit of the Century which is meant for creating pulp stories.
