What VPN are you planning to use?

Good question. I'm interested in recommendations since Linux is still so new. I'm essentially looking to create a site-to-site VPN between Ubuntu and Sophos UTM. And if I'm using a single network interface, I'm assuming this will require some sort of split dns setup?

    • Ubuntu Server 2 Network Interfaces whith 1 that is public + 1 that VPNs back home

I've got an Ubuntu server out on Azure (and before someone asks, Azure is perfect for this since it's included in my MS Partner subscription) that I'm using to learn and test on. I currently have a single network interface added and enabled and configured firewall rules to allow HTTPS and SSH traffic through. Here is what I'd like to do and I'm hoping I can get some pointers from folks with Linux experience here (I'm a newbie at Linux)...

I'd like to add a second interface to Ubuntu and have that interface VPN back home to me. The purpose would be to only allow SSH via the VPN connection and manage all admin tasks on VPN. I've already setup SSH keys to securely access over the internet but because I could use one of many devices to access the Ubuntu server, I'd like to be able to do this over VPN instead. I don't want all traffic on the VPN because I have a dynamic IP address so ideally, eth0 = internet facing for HTTPS traffic and eth1 = VPN that autoconnects back home to Sophos UTM for all admin related activities.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Am I overcomplicating things?

    • RE: Looking for a Nextcloud install guide

@fuznutz04 The easiest way to get Netcloud setup is to setup their appliance VM. Go to https://nextcloud.com/install/#instructions-server and select "Appliances" tab. You'll see a link to www.techandme.se who is their official Nextcloud appliance provider. Tech And Me has 2 versions of Nextcloud. One on a 20GB drive and another on a 500GB drive. Either choice you can expand the space allocated.

I fucking wish we could get pricing like that in Canada.

Have a buddy buy it for you and hand ship it up.

border agent: That's a nice server you got there.... be a shame if you had to... pay taxes on it! muahahahaha

Nothing to claim, a buddy gave me this equipment from his personal lab.

"In general, the goods you include in your personal exemption must be for your personal or household use. These goods include souvenirs, gifts that you received from friends or relatives living outside Canada or prizes that you won."

Canada customs gives no fucks about gifts, only charging taxes on everything

      https://travel.gc.ca/returning/customs/what-you-can-bring-home-to-canada#conditions

And worst case, why not just have a receipt for $100 for computer equipment.

      What's the tax on that?

You seem to be under the impression that customs agents are dumb. You would be incorrect in my experience.

Tax rate here is 13.5% so potentially saving $500 in tax is not worth the risk. They can seriously mess with you.

      2630x1.25x1.135= $3731CDN.... sigh.

Edit: checked xe.com, it's $1.30:1 sobs quietly for the death of his online shopping fun times

YOu are assuming that the low price would be used. Those could easily be taxed based on a higher $5K or so US price.

For Ontario, Customs will charge me the HST (13%) of the Canadian value of the converted stated cost. So if the server is $2,500 USD, they will convert to CDN and then tag on 13% tax.

One thing I learned recently is that there are no duties to be paid on purchases that are coming in from the US like a used server. Buying new means that the country of original build will decide if there are duty fees to be paid in addition to taxes. Purchasing servers in the US means I only pay the taxes of the CDN declared value. That being said, shippers like FedEx will charge their own CLearance Entry fees and Advancement Fees so unless you have an account with the shippers, these tacked-on fees make it too expensive to buy from the US, even if you do find a crazy good deal.

      😞

@MattSpeller I got a similar quote for same config minus the SSDs and only half the RAM at $2,500 CDN 😞

But $2,500 CDN is like Monopoly money, so that's a good deal, right?

Yeah, no kidding. At today's exchange rates. Lol

Interesting you mention OSTicket because Comodo One is using OSTicket as their ticket system. Compare the two and you'll immediately see it's the same ticket system.

I've taken the plunge and have signed up for a Digital Ocean account and will test this on a Linux box - maybe ubuntu...

You are new to Linux... ONLY use CentOS. Get rid of Ubuntu right now, switch and save yourself a lot of misery.

Is this a personal preference or is there some base in fact for this suggestion. I've had lots of success learning Ubuntu so I have no doubt I could do the same with CentOS but since I'm also relatively new to Linux, this could be useful info to have up front.

    • Nextcloud Provisioning API

Wondering if anyone has successfully used the Nextcloud/Owncloud provisioning API? I've read the documentation but it's really not proving all that helpful for someone who's looking to learn to use it. I'd love to learn to use this so if you've got some experience, I'd love to hear about it.

    • RE: Installing Mattermost on CentOS 7

For those who were still having problems getting Mattermost running on CentOS 7, I was also having the same problems and couldn't get beyond the postgres install. I found another guide and with a few tweaks, I was able to get this running.

      https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/install-mattermost-with-postgresql-and-nginx-on-centos7/

The change that was required from this guide was in the "Download and Extract Mattermost"

      Instead of...
      [root@mattermost ~]# wget -q "https://github.com/mattermost/platform/releases/download/v2.0.0/mattermost.tar.gz" -O mattermost.tar.gz

      Use this...
      wget https://releases.mattermost.com/3.3.0/mattermost-team-3.3.0-linux-amd64.tar.gz

Then in the next block, instead of...
      tar -xvzf mattermost.tar.gz

      Use this...
      tar -xvzf mattermost-team-3.3.0-linux-amd64.tar.gz

After that, follow the guide to the letter and it will get you to this...

@scottalanmiller None, this was my first try with setting up CentOS in hyper-v. I've tried reinstalling a number of times but nothing worked. Tried minimal install and even tried web server install from the DVD ISO but still nothing.

I'm going to try to reinstall but use the standard network adapter instead of the legacy one and see where that gets me. Suppose if that doesn't work I can setup XenServer on a spare R210II I've got sitting around.

@scottalanmiller Wanted to give CentOS 7 a try but for the life of me I can't it to connect to the internet. Installing using legacy network adapter also isn't helping. Trying to get it up and running on Hyper-V. Any idea why Hyper-V is giving me such a hard time? I can successfully ping all internal LAN device so the network is, I'm assuming, configured correctly.

    • RE: OwnCloud or NextCloud etc?

@guyinpv As I mentioned, the installs are still relatively new but they are working flawlessly. The desktop sync clients haven't skipped a beat (can't say the same for OneDrive For Business desktop clients which I had to remove and reinstall a half dozen times because they always locked up), Easy to manage admin interface. Love the ability to autotag files that are uploaded. Built-in file access controls. Built-in retention (I've got it set to autotag for one user so that uploaded files are automatically deleted after 5 days). The built-in letsencrypt process (for Ubuntu) is the most painless way of managing and renewing SSL certs. Who cares that I have to run the renew script once every 3 months...it's literally a single line of code to renew.

You're looking for self-hosted file sharing and sync? This is exactly what this does.
