RE: Star Wars - What do you like about the new movies, and what is not so great?
The newfound obsession with HYPERFUEL, which for the last 40 years wasn't mentioned once, and is now the central plot point in the last two movies released.
An 18 hour slow speed space chase, during which time the heroine travels across the galaxy, finds Luke after nobody could for 30 years, trains with him, and flies back to the hidden base whose location she shouldn't have even known about, all in 18 hours. Oh, and the Resistance is now only like 6 people, and they have no ships, nothing.
And cgi horsecamel hybrids trampling through a casino, because. -
RE: Wink Smart Home Controller
@black3dynamite said in Wink Smart Home Controller:
The only open source alternative is called Things Gateway.
https://iot.mozilla.org/gateway/They also have a list of supported hardware too.
https://github.com/mozilla-iot/wiki/wiki/Supported-Hardware@black3dynamite This is very neat, i like the extend-ability it seems to offer. The problem with all this IoT stuff to me seems like there is no standards. Every company has their own implementation and their stuff only works with their stuff. This project from Mozilla seems to be trying to expand interoperability and compatibility across manufacturers/brand names.

Let me add another one then: we just released a Windows Mobile app. Community FTW, this was done by a volunteer!
Wow that is great. As the last WP user in the world, thank you for doing this.

Getting a version of certbot that works on debian stretch
This is probably a very temporary issue. But it exists today.
debian stretch main repos only have certbot .10 available.
To make a site use https today you need to be using .21+ since theyve updated how they do ACME challenge. New way isnt supported in .10.So to change your existing debian version of python-certbot-apache
sudo apt remove python-certbot-apache
sudo apt autoremove
This removes the unused packages that python-certbot-apache used.nano /etc/apt/sources.list
add# debian stretch-backports deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main
Save and exit
run
sudo apt install python-certbot-apache -t stretch-backports
You will get the newer version .23 that works with new challenge system. I probably could have just used apt-get upgrade after adding the backports repo without removing the old packages. -
XS 7.5 released
XS 7.5 released and has added some features like
--64 host pool size up from 16
--thin provisioned block storage
--qcow2 support
--GFS2 SR support
--USB pass-through
--16TB disks now possible, up from 2TBVery neat. The new features mostly require Enterprise Edition licensing though.
Or you can wait a couple weeks for xcp-ng 7.5 release.
I swear theyve added more features since ditching the usable free version licensing, than they did for the first ten years of development. -
RE: I think I am missing something about Hyper-V....?
to be fair, nobody has listed a single benefit of using HyperV over Xen or ESXi or KVM, other than backup vendor support, which is debatable.

Specifications for server
We have an application that takes data from our devices, stores info about it in a db. Can run firmware updates, change settings, etc. the development vm for this application is 100GB Ubuntu vm running node and mongodb.
Got this from an engineer today, a request of requirements for a customer, and I have never actually speccd somethign that may have this much use.
1,000 sites divided between 9 regions with site count between 75 to 200 each region. 1000 users that can in theory acess any site on any region... 10 -20% of the sites having 10-20 events a day on average but also 10-20 sitesnper region having 100-200 events a day. User variation 10%-15% per year. Daily and weekly reports.
Our application is just a webserver with mongodb. A server capable of hosting this for many users would be something like a Poweredge t640? That might even be overkill. It would need enough space to hold a years worth of data and hold street/map info. The units themselves push data to the server, it isnt going to be polling units. Max users of the website at once would be 100, though typically much lower.

People claim select-string is like grep...
Yet it cant look through output of a cmdlet like
Get-SmbServerConfiguration
Seems ok so far
Get-SmbServerConfiguration | select-string "Auto*"
Clearly these should be returning something. However it does work for things like netstat
I could take Get-SmbServerConfiguration output to a text file then parse it, but why cant PS just read this? -
RE: How Can You Block or Disable "People Also Search For" in Google Results
@scottalanmiller Can you post a screen shot? I dont know what youre describing. If using snip ruins the effect, can use PrintScreen?

RE: I must be doing something wrong... BIOS updates Dell servers
Okay after more problems I have got the update process going.
After you make the bootable iso in rufus, then boot off of it, you will likely get a whole screen full of errors about not being able to mount disks, and finally about
apply_bundles.sh file not found error.https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-Hardware-General/apply-bundles-sh-is-invalid/td-p/4756984
^^This is the solution, though mine required some more.
#mount /dev/sd(b)1 /opt/dell/toolkit/systems
sdb1 might be something else on your computer.
Then I had to manually navigate to
cd /opt/dell/toolkit/systems/drm_files
Finally from here
#./apply_bundles.shIt looks like it is working. Dots are moving across the terminal screen.

I prefer windows 8.1 over any other windows interface. I thought that search feature worked well, and your desktop was less crowded if you took the time to configure the metro interface correctly..... ducks behind a corner....
No, every word you just said is wrong.
Full screen start button screen is the worst idea in the history of computer interfaces. It still infuriates me every time im forced to use 2012 or 8.1 -
RE: What Is an Agentless Backup
I dont get the controversy here. Every single agentless backup uses snapshots, always has. Veeam, Unitrends, etc. How else could they work?
edit: For example, I can do a snapshot in XS/xcp, then export that snapshot. That is a real agentless backup. This is exactly the same process Unitrends uses, with a bit of flair added on like dedup and some other stuff like automation. -
RE: GitLab Returns to the Cloud
Didnt these people go to self hosted recently and then lose all their data last month and had no backups?

RE: Just How Hard is University to Overcome
I must say, if i had not gone to college and racked up debt and started investing at 18 instead of 28, id be retired at 40 as a millionaire. Just a couple hundred dollars a month for ten years adds up quickly, even at the average of 8%.
Making up for that time means i have to put thousands away each month now, which is just about impossible.
Then again, try telling that to an 18 year old kid.
Also, when and why is college so expensive now? As recently as the mid 90s you could go to a state university for like a thousand dollars per quarter, max. Now it is ten times that much. Are kids getting ten times the value? I highly doubt it.
