RE: ServerBear Performance Comparison of Rackspace, Digital Ocean, Linode and Vultr
@scottalanmiller said:
We need some latency numbers from around the world. Anyone want to collect some for us?
Here is the first IP address. A long running ping (hundreds or thousands of pings) would be good, we need the final stats from that:
- 104.236.119.59
- 108.61.151.173
- 172.99.75.133
We have a good idea on bandwidth, IO, CPU and memory. Network latency is pretty huge.
1,200,000 packets later...
via rackspace 8 GB General Purpose v1 based in london--- 162.242.243.171 ping statistics --- 400510 packets transmitted, 400499 received, 0% packet loss, time 400849652ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 79.018/79.634/184.775/2.778 ms --- 104.236.119.59 ping statistics --- 400759 packets transmitted, 400732 received, 0% packet loss, time 401132556ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 73.663/74.533/191.571/2.203 ms --- 108.61.151.173 ping statistics --- 400765 packets transmitted, 400749 received, 0% packet loss, time 401117767ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 69.861/75.792/205.164/3.167 ms

Google Apps account compromised and then deleted
So I've been pulled into help out a friend that just has his google credentials stolen and they immediately (3-5min after the suspicious login email was received) went ahead and deleted their google apps for work account. I'm not too sure why they would gain access and then just delete the account.

RE: PayPal alternatives
@BBigford true, after looking at the fees page, transfers using PayPal balances or using bank account are free for same currency transfers. I only use PayPal purchasing or selling items and always use a credit card because of the extra protection and benefits credit card purchases have so fees always apply.
The added burden of having to create a PayPal account seems un-necessary when all I need to do is get bank details of an already existing account someone has to send them money.

RE: File transfer websites
Using Google Apps for Work Unlimited I've setup a dedicated domain just for storage and get unlimited for $50/month. Servers backup data to there using https://github.com/odeke-em/drive

RE: Mac Users...
I can only second the issues mac mail has in general. We have a user that continues to use it despite the reoccurring issues it gives him. Theirs is using it with Gmail/GApps but signature issue is exactly the same and other problem is sync failing with email and calendar..

RE: Tool to Backup Files to Amazon S3
@scottalanmiller said in Tool to Backup Files to Amazon S3:
Keep in mind, if you delete the original file S3 is not a backup system, it is an archival storage system without a backup.
not entirely true. if you enable versioning on the s3 bucket a delete will not delete the file permanently. add to the bucket MFA Delete and then you'd have to issue the mfa token to even delete a file.
as you can see the bucket it empty after deleting the index.html file, but it's not, all versions still exist.

RE: Voice/Greeting recording for generic holidays and other messages...Where do you get them from?
You could just head over to your nearest Mac and open up terminal.
say -v Kathy -o "audiofile.aiff" -f "textfile.rtf"
You can replace Kathy with any of the Mac voices (ie Alex, Bruce, Fred, Kathy, Vicki, Victoria). That outputs it to an audio file and reads from a source file.
say -v Kathy "This is our new holiday greeting."

RE: ASO alternative
I am running all my sites off of AWS S3 buckets and with global CloudFront enabled for less than $1,00/mo. Even have a few basic eCommerce type sites running on this using stripe and a free heroku dyno for payments. you can always run an ec2 instance if you needed the server.

RE: Managing Android mobiles
I manage both and have to disagree here that iOS is more built for work. They both are very well suited for business use and Android gives you more options and features especially as a user.
Cost is another big factor. Getting a high end Android phone is going to cost considerably less than any iOS comparable device. We are using the OnePlus 2 and 3 which is no less then £150 cheaper than an SE device but more comparable to the 6 is specs/performance/features.
First of all you can fully manage a company owned android device if you want to have full control over it and nobody can remove this and sign in or do anything you don't want them to do. You can even prevent a device from being factory reset in this type of setup.
Assign a device owner to a managed deviceIf you're lucky enough to be on Google Apps the MDM (soon MAM too) management comes free as part of the domain. There's also the lack of dual-sim phones for iOS which as we've started to provide staff with these we've had a huge increase in requests for company provided, dual-sim android phones. Keeping data split between personal and work is also possible with Android which isn't on iOS.
Manage your business's mobile devices
Android for WorkApple of course have DEP and VPP which can help with device management and app purchases and if you're already using Casper, for example, device management is as an optional extra built into their platform.

Configure Excel HPC Cluster for Workbook Offloading
Has anyone set one of these up? I've found a guide for Azure but trying to find a guide to do this with in house resources. Trying to get finance guys to migrate data to a db and use python / R or something similar just isn't possible unfortunately.

RE: Looking to buy a NAS to store graphics files long-term.
Or look at putting in smaller local storage server just for frequently used data and connect to AWS Storage Gateway using a Cached Volume architecture.
Gives you fast local access to data and scalability to grow to any size and then put policies on data in S3 to move to glacier or purge.

RE: google mail stored inside the USA? others?
It's possible with Google. I know Genentech/Roche has all their G Suite data running and stored in Switzerland for example due to their strict regulatory requirements.

RE: google mail stored inside the USA? others?
There's also comprehensive data storage for Russian customers, allowing you to control via OU which staff data goes to servers located in Russia.
